The conflict between forest preservation and development, exemplified by Namyoya forest reserve in Mukono, underlines the urgent need to protect forests for climate action and wildlife conservation. It is a constitutional duty of the Uganda government to safeguard forest reserves, prohibiting their degazettement as per the Land Act. The government holds these reserves in trust for the citizens, and preserving them not only aligns with global environmental commitments but also ensures a sustainable future for all. Moreover, the government's green growth and tree planting strategies emphasize the importance of balancing development with environmental stewardship. Peri-urban forests play a crucial role in urban ecology and community well-being and must be safeguarded as urban areas expand. MCC-SITHP FoVEP Taskforce makes progress towards more sustainable forest management practices in Solomon Islands Members of the Millennium Challenge Corporation-Solomon Islands Threshold Program (MCC-SITHP) Forest Value Enhancement Project (FoVEP) Taskforce and Reform working group held their third quarterly meeting recently in Honiara. Chair of the taskforce Ms Susan Sulu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology chaired the meeting which discussed key forest management and value enhancements interventions plans under the SITHP. Other taskforce members who attended the meeting included Permanent Secretary Dr Melchior Mataki of the Ministry of National Planning & Development and Permanent Secretary Richard Raomae, Ministry of Forestry and Research and members of FoVEP Reform working group from the key ministries and implementing partners -Live and Learn/Nakau. The taskforce and working group are responsible for providing oversight and technical guidance on forest developments and reform interventions implemented under FoVEP workstream of the SITHP. The forest carbon project at Viru Harbor in Western Province is a practical example of a sustainable alternative to logging. This activity is progressing well. So far, Forest rangers have been trained and a biodiversity survey was successfully completed.  The Viru Harbor site will soon achieve Protected Area status, preserving some of the last low-lying rainforest in Western Province and giving communities a sustainable, long-term source of income. Ongoing work to support carbon trading initiatives in Isabel and Makira provinces are progressing according to schedule. Subject to the successful completion of all technical steps and requirement, communities in Viru should start receiving payment for carbon trade in the first quarter of 2026. The Forest Value Enhancement project, a sub-project of the Solomon Islands Threshold Program (SITHP), is providing communities with viable and sustainable economic alternatives to logging. Also under SITHP, the MCC and Solomon Islands Government are partnering to increase revenues from forestry production while promoting more equitable and inclusive revenue disbursement to local communities, and attaining a regulatory and enforcement framework for sustainable utilisation of forest resources. 🌍🌿 Pegasys has been appointed as the lead for a new project funded by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) in Zambia! 🌿🌍 Pegasys will be conducting a feasibility study for AFD aimed at supporting sustainable forest value chains and conserving protected areas in the Greater Kafue ecosystem and the Luangwa – Nyika corridors within the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA) landscape. Our study will focus on: 🌲 Providing a detailed understanding of the current state and potential of forest value chains and protected areas in the targeted regions. 🌳 Identifying vulnerabilities, opportunities, and gaps to enhance conservation efforts. 🌿 Promoting sustainable economic development and environmental sustainability. Leveraging our ongoing forestry work, we aim to support AFD with implementing meaningful change thanks to Pegasys’ extensive expertise and experience in working in Zambia, a new partner country for the AFD, and fostering sustainable development and environmental conservation. This project will contribute significantly to biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and sustainable livelihoods in the KAZA landscape, enhancing the resilience and sustainability of the region's ecosystems and communities. As Ghana strives to meet its climate targets under the Paris Agreement, illegal deforestation poses a significant challenge. Government control of all “naturally occurring” timber trees on public and private land is a contributing factor to this issue. This makes it harder for Ghana to generate 23.5 million emission reductions from “gender-responsive sustainable forest management” between 2020 – 2030. The proposed tree tenure policy reform in Ghana, which transfers full ownership of all trees to farmers and landowners, could be a solution to this problem. This policy reform is reviewed in an assessment my colleagues and I under the USAID Integrated Land Resources and Governance program’s Supporting Deforestation-Free Cocoa in Ghana activity. 🌳 REVIVING NICARAGUA'S FORESTS | Treevive facilitates climate finance for forest conservation and restoration by developing investment-ready forest carbon projects. We would like to highlight one of our projects: MLR Forestal in Nicaragua. Situated in the Northern Caribbean regions of Siuna and Bonanza in Nicaragua, within the buffer zone of the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve, MLR Forestal’s project is a comprehensive effort to restore degraded lands through innovative agroforestry. Spanning 4,204 hectares, this project combines commercial forestry and agroforestry systems, focusing on teak and cocoa. It’s a model of sustainable land management that not only rehabilitates the environment but also promotes economic development in the region. 🌿 MLR Forestal has the largest nursery in the North Caribbean: MLR Forestal can produce up to 500,000 plants per year. 🐦 28% of the total project area is designated for the protection and conservation of biodiversity. 🐒 By the end of 2023, 973 species had been identified, with active restoration efforts planting native species to accelerate ecosystem recovery. 💪 Strong policies ensure fair employment and collaboration with local and indigenous communities, maintaining good, respectful relationships with neighboring communities.
