🌳🥗 What do forests have to do with food? From parkia seeds to baobab leaves, forests have long been home to nutritious ingredients that support food security and health in many communities. CIFOR-ICRAF scientists explored how people across Burkina Faso, Zambia, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Cameroon use forest foods — revealing not only unique recipes but also important links between forests, landscapes, and nutrition. 🌳 Cool forests: Nature’s air conditioning system The world surpassed the 1.5°C global warming threshold in 2024, intensifying the urgency to protect the ecosystems that regulate our climate. In this analysis, CIFOR-ICRAF’s Robert Nasi highlights how forests and trees are critical allies in the fight against climate change — cooling cities by up to 8°C, absorbing 7.6 billion tonnes of CO2 annually, and reducing the risks of extreme heat and drought. But deforestation is dismantling this natural defense system. Between 2000 and 2023, we lost more than 130 million hectares of tropical forests, with some deforested areas experiencing temperature spikes of up to 4°C. Globally, millions of people depend on tree products – from nutritious fruits and nuts to timber, fuel, medicine, and fodder – for food, income, and survival. Trees help mitigate climate change, protect biodiversity, safeguard watersheds, and enhance soil health. Yet, 30% of the world’s tree species are now at risk due to deforestation, invasive pests, diseases, and climate change. As humanity loses tree resources, we lose vital tools to address the interconnected crises of climate, biodiversity, and food security. From the Bonn Challenge to the African Great Green Wall, forest restoration and tree planting efforts are growing fast. Yet, many saplings still fail to thrive, especially under unpredictable weather and environmental stress. This is why investments must be grounded in science and the development of strong tree seed systems. The urgent need to conserve and use trees has never been greater. An estimated 65% of Africa's productive land is degraded — reducing agricultural productivity, increasing food insecurity, and weakening community resilience to climate change. The second phase of the Regreening Africa programme is now underway, scaling sustainable land management practices and strengthening policies to drive restoration in Ghana, Somalia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, and Niger. Environmental experts, donors, and policymakers gathered in Tamale, Ghana to outline a roadmap for restoring degraded landscapes and enhancing food security. The programme will empower communities through agroforestry, tree planting, sustainable grazing, and farmer-managed natural regeneration (FMNR). Funded by the European Union (EU), the initiative is implemented by CIFOR-ICRAF in collaboration with World Vision, Catholic Relief Services, CARE, Sahel Eco, and AVSF - Agrónomos y Veterinarios Sin Fronteras. The first phase (2017–2023) supported over 600,000 households and restored nearly 1 million hectares of land — this next phase aims to scale that success even further.
