How can we make restoration projects that truly thrive for both people and biodiversity? A new pilot program in Rwanda and Uganda is tackling this head-on, providing a financial model where farmers are compensated for nurturing tree seedlings on their farms. In this performance-based model, farmers receive valuable incentives—such as livestock or farming tools—upon achieving specific tree survival targets, leading to a dramatic boost in survival rates from 30% to 60%. Why trees on farms? These trees do more than enhance biodiversity; they connect forests, stabilize water supplies, and create new income streams, ultimately empowering farming communities to adapt to climate change. The Consultation workshop on a global rangelands standard and monitoring scheme kicked off today at the CIFOR-ICRAF campus in Nairobi. Over the next two days, experts and stakeholders will discuss the development of a global rangeland standard and a monitoring scheme as part of the STELARR (Sustainable Investments in Large-Scale Rangeland Restoration) project. Funded by the Global Environment Facility, implemented by IUCN, and executed by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) with supporting partners, this initiative seeks to unlock private sector finance for large-scale rangeland restoration. Participants will provide feedback on the draft standard, led by the Sustainable Fibre Alliance, and help shape a global framework for monitoring the impact of rangeland restoration. This workshop provides an important platform for advancing sustainable rangeland management and ensuring financial accountability for ecosystem services.
