The Touch World Cup which is taking place at the University of Nottingham this week, is not only the biggest ever held, with around 4000 participants from 39 countries, but it is also the greenest, thanks to the two Hydrogen Power Units (HPUs) provided by GeoPura which the Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) is supporting through our HyDEX programme. All of the green hydrogen used in the Hydrogen Power Units is produced locally from solar power generated electricity which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis. The HPUs then convert the hydrogen into electricity which is used to provide the power for the event. The only by-product from the HPU is water! Typically, sporting events of this scale, with 139 teams playing over 23 fields for seven days would require several portable diesel generators to produce the power needed for all of the various services, facilities and catering outlets on the sites.
