The #wastehierarchy is a set of international guidelines for waste management, established by Agenda 21 of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Construction waste management involves diverting or redirecting construction materials, renovation, demolition and deconstruction to the cycle of manufacturing, donation and reuse, according to the US Green Building Council - Orange County Building Council (USGBC). Although the construction company is responsible for managing construction and demolition waste, municipalities, state owned entities, and the project team also play a role. This roadmap is the result of a stakeholder-driven process where buildings experts across the continent were consulted to collectively build the timelines for each of the activities. They serve as a framework for the buildings and construction sector to align with the climate related objectives set out in the Paris Agreement. The Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) Regional Roadmaps for Africa, Asia and Latin America cascade this methodology for the regions, incorporating relevant key insights and examples of best practice. This roadmap intends to: 🌱 Guide policy makers when designing their national buildings and climate strategies, for example when undertaking a review of their 2020-25 nationally determined contributions (NDCs). 🌱 Identify goals and milestones, and to help organisations in determining their long- term and medium-term investment strategies. 🌱 Identify goals and milestones and therefore does not replace a more detailed national or local buildings and construction roadmap that would take into account individual country circumstances. A responsible builder builds with awareness, uses materials derived from the recycling of construction residues, knows their origin, quality, composition, final destination and participates in the creation and use of alternative sources.

The Tasmanian Government's 2024 Waste and Resource Recovery High Priority Infrastructure Grant is focussed on supporting infrastructure projects across a range of scales that will improve the capability and capacity of facilities, equipment and systems directly supporting #ResourceRecovery and the Tasmanian #CircularEconomy. Submissions that can demonstrate a clear improvement of the #reuse, #repair, collection, sorting, processing, #recycling and #remanufacturing of priority materials will be prioritised.

I reckon we need to tell the Government it needs to change its thinking about waste and recycling infrastructure. Instead of making it so hard that it has become nearly impossible to get new projects approved or facilities up and running, we need to protect this industry and its facilities from the NIMBY syndrome and the urban encroachment. Good morning ! We are pleased to present one of the most interesting environmental protection projects - an integrated waste management complex located on an artificial island near Hong Kong. We are very proud being one of the subcontractors of this project!   Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) will be capable of treating approximately 1 million tonnes per year of municipal solid waste (MSW), starting from 2025. The facility is built on a 16-hectare artificial island, located 22 km from Hong Kong. Compressed waste in tightly sealed containers will be transported by special waste container vessels from 3 transfer stations near Hong Kong to the quay located on an artificial island. Then containers will be reloaded onto trucks, which will ultimately transport the waste to the storage silos of the incinerator. The key requirement of the Investor was to design and deliver a solution that would support the weighing of each truck entering the incineration plant in less than 10 seconds. To meet this requirement, we developed a system consisting of 4 weighbridges (2 one-way and 2 two-way, activated depending on traffic intensity), terminals with numeric keyboards and intercoms, LED boards (1,0 x 1,5 meters), barriers, traffic lights and cameras for automatic number plate recognition & waste container numbers. The entire solution is to be integrated with five other systems managing operations & processes of IWMF.   Another requirement of the Investor was the need to ensure the continuity of operation of the transport control system in the event of a failure (system redundancy). To meet these challenges, we have designed two operating systems - primary and auxiliary, which include: power systems, UPS sets, backup systems and database servers. With an increasing focus on the circular economy in construction, the European Commission has recently published their updated Construction and Demolition Waste Management Protocol 2024, incorporating the guidelines for undertaking Pre-Demolition and Pre-Renovation Audits throughout EU Member States aimed at contributing to better Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) management and diverting waste from landfill. This revised protocol aims to enhance CDW management at all stages of the value chain, increasing the confidence in the quality of products prepared for reuse and materials for recycling. Throughout the European Union, CDW is understood to be the largest waste stream, contributing to almost 40% of total waste generated. Whilst many EU member States have their own voluntary and mandatory Pre-demolition and Pre-Renovation Audit requirements, many are yet to have implemented. This protocol is therefore aimed at ensuring the reuse and recovery of CDW as per the waste hierarchy is followed throughout the EU, contributing to the reduction of waste, overall, reducing greenhouse glasses and benefiting the overall circularity of the EU economy.
