Growing the best malts, responsibly, is what matters to Perrine Bourgoin, agronomy manager at Malteries Soufflet - Interview 👇 🎤 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞? I'm in charge of the agronomy department at Malteries Soufflet. In other words, I'm responsible for supplying the group's malthouses in terms of quantity and quality. I work in France. 🎤𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬? We oversee the development of the barley, from selecting new varieties to harvesting and transporting it to the malting plant. The regions I oversee include Brazil and Argentina, Western Europe, and India. This involves traveling around the world for 12-13 weeks each year to meet our partners such as seed providers, agronomical teams, and barley producers. 🎤𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐬, 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬? Quality & Quantity, Responsibly! My primary objective is to ensure a quality barley supply to fill the malt houses and keep our plant running at full capacity, providing our clients with the best malts. We also collaborate with farmers for more respectful agricultural practices. For instance, we are heavily involved in low-carbon production projects. 🎤𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫? I was an apprentice at Malteries Soufflet during my master's program. Once I graduated as an engineer, I was offered a position in the Agronomy Team! So, I am a true Malteries Soufflet professional! 🎤𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤? The weather. Monitoring the agroclimatic conditions is also part of my job. It's important to remember that when working with living things, weather conditions are extremely important. 🎤𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛? Learning from other countries, experiencing multiculturalism. A farmer is still a farmer, regardless of the country. But they face different challenges... So, it's important to understand their issues and how to adapt barley growing to each country. 🎤𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠? There will be challenges, but we'll face them! I'm talking about climate change and CSR standards, which are profoundly changing our practices, but it adds meaning to our job: we are game-changers for a better future! 🎤𝐈𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤? You have to use the earth's potential responsibly. #agronomy #agriculture #barley #lowcarbonfootprint #malt

Attention Kansas sorghum growers . . . "similar to 2023, there appears to be a potential for high chinch bug infestation into seedling sorghum in areas of south central Kansas," according to Brent Bean, Ph.D., Sorghum Checkoff Director of Agronomy. "Growers are reporting high numbers of chinch bugs in harvest wheat fields. These chinch bugs have the potential to move into newly planted sorghum fields."
