New Sorghum Varieties Unveiled: A Game-Changer for Nigerian Farmers🌾 CIMMYT’s #AVISA project, in collaboration with the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, introduced three innovative #sorghum varieties—SAMSORG 52, 53, and 54—during a Field Day in Bagadawa, Kano State. These drought-tolerant, fast-maturing varieties are set to transform sorghum farming, with higher yields and #climateresilience! Farmers on-site learned firsthand from scientists about the best agronomic practices to maximize yields and improve #foodsecurity. SAMSORG 52 matures in just 85-90 days, while SAMSORG 53 and 54 offer flexible maturity options for rainy and dry seasons, providing crucial solutions for Nigeria's food system. 🌱 #CIMMYT is at the forefront of this transformation, ensuring that farmers have the tools to thrive in a changing climate. #SorghumInnovation #ClimateAdaptation #SustainableAgriculture

🌾 Celebrating #InternationalRuralWomensDay by spotlighting Malho Marndi, a pioneering smallholder farmer from Odisha, India, who is transforming her community through Direct Seeded Rice (#DSR) technology! 🌾 Faced with the challenges of climate change and labor shortages, Malho embraced DSR with the support of #CIMMYT’s Cereal Systems Initiative for South Asia (#CSISA). Her yields nearly doubled, and she has since expanded her farm to an impressive 60 acres! 🚜🌱 Not only has Malho succeeded on her own land, but she’s also become a service provider, empowering other farmers by sharing her knowledge and equipment. Her inspiring journey demonstrates the power of innovation and mechanization to uplift rural women and communities. Let’s continue to champion women like Malho, whose resilience and leadership pave the way for a more sustainable and productive future. 🌾💪 Read the full story: https://bit.ly/3Nt2QvM #RuralWomen #SmallholderSuccess #WomenInAg CGIAR #IRRI

🌾 Rice: Key to India's Food Security & Export Growth 🌾 A new study in #NatureCommunications outlines pathways for sustainable intensification of rice production in #India, boosting yields while protecting the environment and profitability. Using machine learning, the study analyzed over 15,000 field records and found that targeted nitrogen application and irrigation could triple yields—especially in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. By shifting from "one-size-fits-all" practices to farm-specific solutions, this approach offers higher returns for farmers and sustainable resource use.
