When you hear the words - "the future of healthcare," it's easy to think of health innovation, digital health, and tech-driven advances. And while these are important pieces... They are only part of the larger healthcare puzzle. The reality is, the future of healthcare will rely on all types of organizations and leaders. That should get many of you really excited! However, I firmly believe that healthcare has its most profound impact at the local level, where organizations truly understand their communities' unique needs and challenges. Having deep local insight gives them an unmatched opportunity to transform healthcare in ways that broader innovations and organizations can't always reach. So, while I love the buzz around digital health and health innovation. I'm even more fascinated by community-based organizations. These teams have an often-overlooked "x-factor" for impact that could redefine healthcare...an advantage many may not yet see coming. And this is what makes the future of healthcare truly exciting.

What advice would you give to someone seeking to scale a healthcare operation? As a healthcare planner, I would advise someone seeking to scale a healthcare operation in the African region, especially in the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) domain, to follow these steps: - Identify and prioritize the health needs of the target population and the context, using evidence-based data and participatory approaches¹. - Develop and test locally appropriate and sustainable health innovations that can address the identified needs and improve health outcomes, as well as ensure health, safety and environmental protection throughout the innovation process and implementation. This may involve leveraging emerging technologies and innovations, such as digital health, mobile health, telemedicine, etc. - Create an enabling environment for scaling up the health innovations, by strengthening the capacity of health workers, managers and policy makers; enhancing the availability of resources and infrastructure; fostering collaboration and coordination among different stakeholders; and ensuring accountability and transparency. - Monitor and evaluate the impact of the health innovations on health outcomes, quality of care, cost-effectiveness, equity and other relevant indicators. This may require using appropriate indicators, data sources and methods, as well as engaging with beneficiaries and other stakeholders. Additionally, assess and mitigate any potential risks or challenges related to health, safety and environment.

Yesterday, the Deeble Institute for Health Policy Research released a Persepctive Brief titled' Engaging stakeholders in healthcare innovation: How hard can it be?' The intention of the brief is to explore the lessons learnt from the implementation of three allied health-led service innovations with diverse stakeholder groups; and propose a more deliberate and strategic approach to stakeholder engagement to implement sustainable innovative practice in healthcare using a service logic. Read the full brief below: #alliedhealth
Today, the AHHA’s Deeble Institute for Health Policy Research released a Perspective Brief titled ‘Engaging stakeholders in healthcare innovation: How hard can it be?’ which underscores the crucial role of stakeholder engagement in healthcare. This Brief was authored by experts from Queensland Health and The University of Queensland Business School. Healthcare service innovations are dependent on a wide range of stakeholders, such as consumers, providers, funders and policy makers, all of whom hold diverse interests. Innovations often fail to attain outcomes or make a meaningful impact due to poor stakeholder engagement. Expertise in engaging stakeholders is often a missing link between success and failure in the healthcare setting. Prior to commencing the research, key stakeholders were selected based on convenience, existing professional relationships, and positional authority rather than their roles, resources, or influence on the project's aims and outcomes. This brief aims to share lessons learned from implementing three allied health-led service innovations with diverse stakeholder groups and to propose a more intentional and strategic approach to stakeholder engagement to achieve sustainable innovative practices in healthcare using a service logic. A robust economy demands an efficient and well-functioning healthcare system. This reality highlights the critical importance of maintaining strong health systems across U.S. communities at all levels, as Dr. Airica Steed,Ed.D, MBA, RN, CSSMBB,FACHE,IASSC, president and CEO of The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH), points out in this video: https://hubs.ly/Q02DsDW60 Founded in 1837 during a severe U.S. economic downturn, MetroHealth continues to serve as the public, safety-net hospital system for Cuyahoga County, Ohio. It is but one living example of how resilient and adaptable health systems can be — an important reminder amid the headwinds organizations face today. In 2023, national healthcare spending increased to nearly $4.8 trillion with projections that it will continue to outpace GDP growth for the next decade. These forecasts are not set in stone. Today's health system leaders have the opportunity to bend the cost curve and drive measurable improvements in efficiency and care delivery within their organizations and through collaborative efforts. We invite you to join us for the Becker's Healthcare 12th Annual CEO + CFO Roundtable in November 2024, a 3.5-day event where healthcare leaders convene and share what it means to build and lead healthier systems that drive a healthier economy. It’s not as simple as “out with the old”. Innovating in healthcare often means navigating through a complex web of systemic barriers and entrenched policies whose relevance may have waned with the passage of time. At Cena, our journey into this landscape taught us invaluable lessons. The healthcare system, with its often rigid regulations and commitment to traditional practices, can seem resistant to new ideas. But part of our evolution was learning how to adapt within these constraints. Flexibility and strategic thinking were crucial. We had to know when to challenge the status quo and when to work within it. Building relationships with stakeholders, from policymakers to fellow healthcare professionals, was key to turning potential adversaries into allies working together to advance care and the system that supports its delivery. Our successes at Cena stem from more than innovative thinking. They are the result of our ability to adeptly navigate the complex healthcare system with its myriad of policies and regulations and to be inclusive in our efforts to examine the status quo and explore options to meet the needs of the patients we serve. We've learned that meaningful change in healthcare combines creative ideas with a deep understanding of the existing system. This journey has taught us the importance of collaboration and strategic alignment within these frameworks, reinforcing our dedication to achieving impactful and sustainable improvements in healthcare.

The essence of healthcare management can never be emphasized. It encompasses a diverse spectrum of responsibilities, from overseeing administrative tasks like budgeting, staffing, and policy implementation to strategizing for long-term growth and development within healthcare organizations. Their multifaceted role lies at the core of healthcare administration, shaping the delivery of services, and contributing to the overall effectiveness of healthcare systems. Management practices are important in all health care settings. Strengthening the management capabilities within the health system is being increasingly seen as a critical strategy for improving the performance of health care delivery and building health systems. With the growing recognition of the essential role of health management in health services, health care providers are adopting management practices that strengthen and complement clinical activities and that aim to improve the outcomes of health services. #diplomainhealthcaremanagement #uniathena #athenaglobaleducationUK
