Yesterday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the US, celebrating the activist’s fight for racial equality in the 1960s. The National Park Service is working on rehabilitating historic buildings at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park. Over the last few months, we have published various tenders for the National Park Service’s project to rehabilitate various historic buildings at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, including his birthplace. Yesterday, we highlighted a sources sought notice for the rehabilitation of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park visitor centre and headquarters building. These initiatives are not just about preserving a site but an effort to keep alive the stories of nonviolent activism and the struggle for civil rights. The National Park Service manages many sites of brutal violence and historic significance to the Civil Rights Movement, including the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument and the Freedom Riders National Monument in Alabama, keeping alive these stories of sacrifice and inspiration. In a parallel development, the Fermanagh & Omagh District Council in Northern Ireland is working to create a Peace Park in Omagh, County Tyrone, the site of the deadliest incident during The Troubles. This incident, a car bombing by an IRA splinter group in 1998, resulted in tragic loss of life and numerous injuries. Now, a proposed Peace Park is envisioned as a space of unity and remembrance, a testament to resilience in the face of violence. Both projects underscore the power of museums and heritage sites as spaces for reckoning with our pasts and healing. They serve as poignant reminders of our collective history, offering insights and tools for fostering dialogue around violent and traumatic histories while giving visitors space for their own experiences. We thought these two initiatives were both unique opportunities for museum and heritage sector professionals to engage in work that is not only about conservation but also about educating, reflecting, and healing. Find out more about these projects at MuseumINSIDER. #MuseumProfessionals #HeritageConservation #CivilRights #PeaceBuilding #Omagh #HistoricalSites #MLK #MartinLutherKingJr

What are our practices for healing when working with traumatic collections? How are we supporting ourselves as museum and heritage workers? How are creating spaces for healing with communities whose histories are being told? Join us for an impactful session at the upcoming Museums + Heritage Show Show on May 15th - "Who Cares? Understanding Empathy and Trauma in Museums" with award-winning documentary filmmaker Ashton John. We'll be screening the powerful short film "To Whom Does This Belong?", made by Ashton John with Museum X, UK Activist Museum Award 2024 recipient, together for Black Voices Cornwall CIO and Cornwall Museums Partnership. The film explores Cornish Black History through local archives and museum collections. You can expect a journey of raw reactions to artefacts ranging from newspaper articles to journal entries from a slave ship captain. We’ll discuss the discoveries made, Cornwall’s links to slavery and whether we think these artefacts should be on display at museums. We aim to spark critical discussions around confronting difficult histories, fostering empathy, and ensuring responsible and ethical interpretation of sensitive collections and subject matter in museums. Don't miss this powerful session, which sheds light on the trauma of racism and encourages museums to develop trauma-informed approaches as they decolonise their collections and practices: https://lnkd.in/e-RQiD5C Ashton John is adept at capturing the stories of diverse communities often overlooked. His films inspire social change and awareness. #MuseumsConnectingCommunities #DecolonizeMuseums #TraumaInformedPractices #RawHistories #EthicalCuration #SocialJustice

“Countless museums and memorials have not stopped rising antisemitism,” Anita Lasker-Wallfisch told a committee of MPs yesterday. “We are unlikely to learn now what we have not learned in the last 80 years.” The 98-year-old survivor of the Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen death camps said she found it very difficult to understand how the government “could even contemplate” putting a learning centre below ground in a public park adjoining the Houses of Parliament — though she made no secret of her suspicions. Her oral evidence left MPs and counsel for the government speechless — as you can see by watching this three-minute clip:

Building relationships are key to a strong community.
President of Coachella Valley History Museum, Rebecca Rizzo, spoke to The La Quinta Rotary Club of the Desert today about our beautiful campus. She's pictured here with Tim Morgan, President of The La Quinta Rotary Club of the Desert. Here's what Rebecca had to say about the experience: "Thrilled to stand before the La Quinta Rotary today and spread the word about the marvels at the Coachella Valley History Museum! Sharing the wonders of one of my favorite places in the valley is truly a privilege. I wholeheartedly align with the Rotary's principle of 'Service Before Self,' and I'm so excited to share this message from a platform that resonates with community and history." #cvhm #CommunityLeaders #indiocalifornia #coachellavalley #laquinta

Philanthropy and Arts and Culture institutions can be powerful allies in shifting the cultural hierarchies that permeate our daily lives by addressing inequalities in who and what gets funded. To do this, we must reflect on our donor relations practices, what exhibitions are in our museums, and why small box theatre companies constantly struggle to sell out smaller productions. Read our Op-Ed: Upending Cultural Hierarchies in Arts & Culture, An Internal Assessment for Change by Monica Fernandez to learn more: https://buff.ly/3qPAyDZ.

Ten years ago today, I joined 9/11 family members, rescue and recovery workers, and survivors, to dedicate the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Today it stands as a permanent reminder of those killed, and the service, bravery, and compassion of those who stood together in unity during those dark hours. The 9/11 Memorial Museum preserves an essential moment in our history for future generations, ensuring that we will never forget. Join me in visiting the #911Museum, which will now offer free admission to New Yorkers on the first Monday of each month beginning June 3.
