❓Did you know that volunteers play a lead role in determining how dollars donated to United Way are invested in the community? ✏️ This year, nearly 80 volunteers reviewed proposals aiming to support our Bold Goal focused on Strengthening Families. How it works: Every year, local non-profits apply for grants from United Way to support their programs. With the help of volunteers on our Community Impact Review Panel, these applications are thoughtfully evaluated based on United Way’s strategy and on the impact each can have on our neighbors in poverty. Charity Cycle Challenge - 508km in 4 days! A few years ago myself and a group of peers came together to act as advocates for the charity, Hope and Homes for Children, to raise awareness and raise funds. Hope and Homes’ objective is to stop institutional care in Eastern Europe and Africa, cease the neglect and abuse imposed on children and educate those involved and in power, that family units are where children should be raised. Recently, Hope and Homes for Children became a humanitarian charity, by getting hundreds of orphaned and estranged children out of war-torn Ukraine, to safety. We were so incredibly impressed to hear how, with the charity’s support, so many children travelled the 508km from Kyiv to the Romanian border by car, yes, but also by bike or foot, that myself and fellow advocates, are travelling to Romania, in May, to visit the children still in the refugee camps on the border to hear their stories. We wanted to understand the endeavour they undertook by enduring that extraordinary journey for ourselves, and try and raise funds at the same time, so we have committed to cycling the very same distance of 508km in just 4 days in April. To give you an idea of the extremity of this challenge you may have seen, Mollie King, BBC Radio 1 presenter, recently really struggling to cycle across the country for Comic Relief, coincidentally just 8 km less than us, but over 5 days not 4, she had one more day!!! So, this is going to be extraordinarily tough! And … I had never ridden a road bike until about a month ago! We are looking to raise enough money to help to reunite 10 children with their families. I have participated in at least one charity event every year for the last 8 years, but I always contribute personally rather than ask for sponsorship. However, on this occasion, given how tough it will be, and how much we need to raise, as well as wanting to bring the wonderful work of the charity to your attention, I thought I would see if you would like to, at the very least, follow our progress and learn more about the charity, and as a bonus, support this great cause with even the smallest donation, if you feel comfortable doing so. Digital poverty is when a person does not have access to the internet through a personal device. This, in this day and age, is incredibly important as, for example, the majority of jobs are advertised online. It also gives people access to all of the resources needed for completing higher education. This is why our gifting programme is so important. It allows us to donate laptops to people facing digital poverty, reducing the number in Scotland. At the end of last year I wrote that we were going to give 1% of our turnover (not profit) for the year to organisations that reflect a world we want to strive for. It took us a few weeks to sort ourselves out and figure out our priorities, but we've now 1) donated to some of those organisations 2) made a spreadsheet public, both to keep a log for ourselves and to keep us accountable to the people around us. I said to Eliot Fineberg one day last year that I didn't think we could call ourselves things like 'equitable' or 'inclusive', you have to behave in that way and allow others to make up their own minds (ht The New Forest Off Road Club). So this is a log of some of our actions and beliefs. Our company is a vehicle for a prototype of a world we want to live in, so we've given some money to some of the sorts of organisations that contribute to that world, too. Anyway.
