In recent years, California has made significant investments to increase access to high-quality #EarlyLearning and Care opportunities for our state’s youngest learners. Groundbreaking initiatives—such as the creation of Child Care Providers United, a new labor union and collective bargaining contracts for Family Child Care (FCC) and Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) providers, increased investments in subsidized child care spaces and preschool programs, and the expansion of Universal Transitional Kindergarten (TK)—have demonstrated California’s commitment to building a robust mixed-delivery Early Learning and Care system that supports the state’s diverse children, families, and Early Learning and Care workforce. One of CCA's education legislative priorities is to address the needs of the increased number of children who will be in the preschool system following the change in the law moving the Kindergarten age cutoff date to September 1st. The new law requiring kids to be 5 by September 1 for kindergarten is going to leave families without access to early childhood education, worsening our state's early childhood crisis. Around 9,000 families are affected, and about half (4,500) of these are low-income. With the average cost of childcare at nearly $13,000 per year, Connecticut families are struggling to decide between making ends meet, securing their children's early education opportunities, or being part of the workforce. Parents and educators need the time and funding to support kids through this change.

When you hear the word “brave,” you might think of the heroism of first responders, humanitarian workers, or doctors and nurses on the front lines. As a preschooler talking to a new friend on the playground is brave. So is trying a new vegetable or riding a bike for the first time. Jumping in the pool, even into the arms of a trusted adult, is brave. As parents and educators, we want our children to grow into confident adults who are willing to take tough but worthwhile action. That’s why it’s important to acknowledge children's day-to-day acts of bravery. At La Neeno's Kindergarten & Day Care we want to create experiences where with appropriate support, children can develop an inner sense of ‘I can do it,’ and that helps them build self-esteem, confidence and more courage — maybe even a sense of adventure.” Brave is an abstract concept and children and under are concrete thinkers, so it’s important to bring the trait to life through examples, metaphors and imaginative play. Children need a strong, stable foundation from the adults around them, who give them the confidence to try new things and even fail — sometimes repeatedly. Children can only learn at a higher level when they feel safe and secure. That’s how they develop bravery, courage and trust.
