🌟 Celebrating a STEM Giant: The Legacy of Giulio Natta 🌟 Did you know that the comfortable sports gear you love, the durable ropes that withstand the sea, and the versatile plastics that shape our everyday life owe a great deal to Giulio Natta? Born on February 26, 1903, this Italian chemist's groundbreaking work has paved the way for innovations that continue to impact us today. In 1963, alongside Karl Ziegler of Germany, Natta was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for their invention of the Ziegler-Natta catalysts. This revolutionary discovery enabled the creation of high polymers with isotactic chains, leading to the development of products that combine strength with lightweight flexibility — think of ropes that float or fabrics that are both sturdy and light. Natta's work exemplifies the power of STEM to transform our world, turning imaginative ideas into tangible innovations. As we celebrate his birth anniversary, let's remember the enduring impact of his contributions and feel inspired to pursue our own passions in STEM. Who knows? The next groundbreaking discovery could come from one of you, our future scientists and innovators! Let's continue to explore, learn, and innovate, following in the footsteps of giants like Giulio Natta. #STEMEducation #FutureScientist #Innovation #ChemistryHeroes #GiulioNatta

Meet the first of our 2024 MIRTA teams, AstraNeer, which is creating a new, advanced water filter that uses graphene to clean drinking water by removing PFAS, toxic pollutants found in many water sources that can be dangerous to human health. By doing this, the team hopes to provide cleaner and safer drinking water, improving everyone’s health and the environment. The team behind the project is co-led by UMaine Libra Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Onur G. Apul and postdoctoral research associate Manisha Choudhary, and includes Kenneth Mensah. MIRTA, coordinated by UMaine’s Foster Center for Innovation, assists teams in advancing lab discoveries into public and commercial use. Teams work 20 hours per week for 16 weeks doing market research, intellectual property analysis and business model development to bring their inventions to market. Commercialization plans vary depending on the type of invention a team brings to MIRTA, and the result could be starting a new company or licensing to an existing one. From the teams in the first six MIRTA cohorts, eight new startups have been formed and the teams have collectively raised more than $6.4 million in external funding and prototype sales to support ongoing commercialization.
