Tips for Maintaining Patience Part 4 of a 10-part series on Tips for Caregivers by Caregivers No one is saying bury your feelings- but if you want to maintain more calm in the moment, these are tools to use. Scenario: your LO just did #2 all over your newly cleaned bathroom. 1. Practice mindfulness- which means practice staying in the moment- this very moment. Don’t key into “I just cleaned it”- that’s in the past. Don’t key into “this will take hours”- that’s the future. Stay in this one moment of fixing it and that will help take the emotion out of it. 2. At the root, impatience comes from lack of control. Accept what you can’t control- over and over I hear CGrs say “Remember, it’s not them, it’s the disease.” Sometimes you need to say it like a mantra. 3. Know your triggers and emotionally and mentally prepare for them to get triggered. 4. In the moment, ask yourself, “Is this helping me?” Is your frustration making the situation even worse? 5. Taking 10 slow, deep breaths can help. It buys you time and helps distract you. After the breaths- you can act instead of react. #patience #caregivers
