Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) play a vital role in creating workplace environments where employees thrive. These volunteer, employee-led groups foster a culture of belonging, support, and positive organizational change. However, their effectiveness varies. A McKinsey report found that 90% of Fortune 500 companies have ERGs, but only 66% of employees see them as building community. This discrepancy is due to the critical role that leadership plays in making these groups work, while delivering bottom-line business results. ERGs are much more than meet and greets in the boardroom. This blog takes a look at the critical role leadership plays in the success of an ERG. Understanding whether your leaders manage with fear or by respect is essential for creating a thriving and psychosocially safe workplace. Fear-based leadership can erode employee morale, stifle creativity, and increase turnover, ultimately jeapodising the organisation's success. On the other hand, leadership rooted in respect fosters trust, innovation, and strong team dynamics. Our Founder Lisa McAdams emphasises the importance of recognising these leadership styles and their profound impact on workplace culture. In her latest blog, she explores how leaders can unknowingly perpetuate a culture of fear and the critical consequences of not addressing this issue. For more insights, check out the full blog and discover how understanding leadership styles can transform your workplace. This topic and more are also explored in her new book, "Safe Spaces: Creating Psychosocially Safe Environments," set for release on November 25th.
