Yesterday was the third Careering into Motherhood live event, bringing together its community of working mums, speakers and partner coaches. It was hard to get the room quiet but when Jane Johnson mananged to hush the excitable chatter we heard some wonderful insights from the day's speakers. Thank you Isabel Berwick, author of Future Proof your Career who shared the wisdom she’s gleaned from hundreds of hours of conversations with organisations. 💡 The most successful managers and employees are curious and open minded 💡 Anger is on the rise in society and workplaces are getting polarised. But anger isn’t an emotion, it’s a mask. As a manager, take a step back, what is the anger masking? Listen for what you’re not hearing. 💡 Highly talented people need to be coached, guided and challenged. They don’t need to be in the office. It was a pleasure to meet so many of JLL’s working family network at the event, who sponsored the event and are champions of Careering into Motherhood. Talking to each of them, and hearing from their executive sponsor, what’s consistently supporting the foundations of JLL’s working parents is respect, trust, and communication. It doesn't sound like a lot but it makes a massive different for the inclusion of working parents. This week is World Childless Week Today, I’m taking this opportunity to make some noise and raise awareness about the topic childless/childfree. Whether you’re childless, childless by circumstance, by choice, and proudly childfree, it’s still a huge taboo and topic that often goes unspoken. Yet, it’s a reality for so many of us. In 2020, about 1 in 6 women in the U.S. reaching the end of their childbearing years had never given birth. The numbers are similar for example in England and Wales, where 18% of women reaching age 45 in 2020 were childless, up from 10% a generation ago. These are not just numbers; these are lives, stories, and emotions that deserve to be acknowledged, seen and celebrated. In honor of World Childless Week, I've decided to jump on LinkedIn after a while and share a blog post that aligns with this global initiative dedicated to raising awareness and challenging the stigma surrounding childlessness and being childfree as well as disenfranchised grief. Together with a dear friend and colleague, we envision a day when all women—whether childless, childfree, or mothers—can gather around a fire, celebrating who we are in our essence and what we bring to this world—celebrate our unique stories and contributions. My deepest wish is for every woman on this journey to reach a place where they can truly enjoy life again and find ease. To feel their emotions, validate their grief, and know in their hearts that their worth isn’t tied to whether or not they have children. I hope they find the courage to explore the freedom of a childfree life and embrace their uniqueness. I hope they get to the place of acceptance, speak out confidently about their experiences and celebrate being childfree.
