Gut glia and intestinal pain Researchers may have discovered why visceral pain is so common in people who have experienced inflammation in their guts, including patients with irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS. Working with mouse models, the physiologists showed that nervous system cells known as glia can sensitize nearby neurons, causing them to send pain signals more easily than they did prior to inflammation. The team discovered that, when exposed to inflammation, glia began releasing compounds that altered the chemistry of the gut and sensitized nerve fibers. #ScienceMission #sciencenewshighlights https://lnkd.in/deme5pqQ

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, affecting millions every year – but a newly developed molecule could help alleviate stroke-related brain injury. For decades, researchers have tried to develop drugs that can block N-methyl-Daspartate receptors (NMDARs) and prevent the neurotoxicity that comes with the elevated levels of glutamate that occur during stroke. But, because NMDARs play an important role in regular brain functions, these attempts have been largely ineffective.  Now, an international study published in Nature Portfolio reveals a never-before seen glutamate binding site and showcases a molecule that can selectively block glutamate, but leave NMDARs intact – paving the way for a new approach to preventing stroke-related brain injury. New TMS research: BRAIN AND MUSCLES MAGNETIC STIMULATION IN A DRUG-FREE CASE OF PARKINSON’S DISEASE: MOTOR IMPROVEMENTS CONCOMITANT TO NEUROPLASTICTY. Abstract states, "Noninvasive stimulation of the nervous system is of growing interest in Parkinson’s disease (PD) to slow-down motor decline and decrease medication and its side-effects. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) used in PD to modulate the excitability of the primary motor cortex (M1) provided controversial results, in part because of interactions with medication. This warrants to administer rTMS in drug-free patients." Abstract states, "The real-real session induced the largest motor improvements, with possible summation of effects between sessions, and maintenance at follow-up (80 days later). This was paralleled by changes of M1 facilitation and inhibition. This sheds a new light on the link between TMS measures of M1 plasticity and motor changes in PD and informs on the remaining potential for #neuroplasticity and functional improvement after 10 years of PD with no antiparkinsonian drug." #TMS #Parkinson’s Read here: https://lnkd.in/g29HPMdj
