Pleased to share this Call for Papers for Renewable Energy Journal Special Issue in "Advancement in renewable energy for urban heat mitigation and energy use minimisation" Papers addressing the below issues are welcome: Achieving a life-cycle net zero carbon built environment requires the production and use of renewable energy not only to support the operation of low energy buildings but also for the production of the building construction and materials. Parallel to this objective is the need to ensure that the ecosystems around the built structures are protected, well managed and restored to ensure that they will be able to continuously support the livelihood of the people occupying that built environment. Achieving a net zero carbon built environment by utilizing renewable energy must go hand-in-hand with working with nature in order to support well-being of the people and the health of the environment. Submit your manuscript by 30 November 2024. Submissions open from 31 July 2024. GESS can redefine urban energy by turning skyscrapers into vertical batteries. Beyond energy storage, these systems might stabilize buildings during earthquakes by acting as dynamic counterweights. Did you know ancient Egyptians used similar principles in pyramid construction to distribute weight? This modern twist on an old idea could also lower real estate costs by reducing the need for expansive power plants. How might city planning evolve to incorporate these dual-function structures effectively? #UrbanInnovation #AncientTech #SustainableFuture

Gravity-based energy storage systems (GESS) could turn skyscrapers into renewable energy sources. Energy Vault and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) are exploring integrating GESS into buildings. GESS lifts heavy blocks with surplus energy, converting it to electricity when lowered. Unlike pumped hydro storage, GESS can be built anywhere, expanding clean energy options. The “EVu” solution integrates GESS into buildings 300 to 1,000 meters tall, generating power for towers and nearby areas. How could this innovation impact urban energy infrastructure? hashtag #construction #architecture #engineering #energy source - The B1M

These gravity-based energy storage systems could enable some of the world’s tallest buildings to generate renewable energy. Energy Vault has teamed-up with architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to explore how gravity energy storage systems (GESS) could be integrated into skyscrapers. GESS uses surplus energy to lift heavy blocks to height, creating potential energy that can later be converted into electricity when the blocks are lowered to the ground. Unlike pumped hydro storage facilities, which can only be built on specific natural sites, the team believes that GESS installations could theoretically be built anywhere, opening up new possibilities for clean energy storage and distribution. The “EVu” solution (shown here) enables GESS integration into tall buildings through the use of a hollowed structure with heights over 300 metres and up to 1,000 metres tall and could generate power for both towers and their surrounding communities. 📷 SOM / Energy Vault Holdings / Business Wire #construction #architecture #engineering #energy

IS FLOATING SOLAR COMPATIBLE WITH DRY PONDS? A pond can be dry for many reasons: ☀ weather (like droughts) 🌊 natural events (like tides) ⚙ the use of the pond (like water retention ponds, hydrodams, etc.). Floating solar can meet this challenge depending on how FPV solutions and projects are engineered and implemented, from the floating platform to its anchoring. On one hand, our floating solar technology for example adapts to the water variation thanks to its flexibility. On the other hand, two teams of anchoring experts ensures the relevancy and reliability of the chosen anchoring solutions: > An R&D team specialized in the development of smart anchoring systems, > Local anchoring design engineers who focus on the specificities of each project. Water level variations where ponds are fully emptied of their water are various: from few-meter depth to a dozen-meter-depth. Take a dive in the challenges of and solutions for floating solar projects installed in such conditions in our article. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eSy7--tR #floatingsolar #watervariation #solar #renewableenergy
