Understanding in proper context Duterte-Xi “gentlemen’s agreement”.

After a year of low water levels in the Panama canal that has limited daily vessel transits, the situation is improving. Canal de Panamá will increase the total number of daily transits from 24 to 31 from May 16th, and raise it further to 32 on June 1st. The severe El Niño weather we have experienced the last year which has caused a very dry weather, appears to be subsiding. And it is likely we will enter a La Niña period at the end of the summer, which usually leads to above average rainfall in Panama. We therefore expect Panama Canal transits to normalize towards the average 36-37 daily transits this year, reducing the need for rerouting. This could alleviate some of the rerouting caused by the instability in the Red Sea, but it will come short off absorbing the massive volumes that normally goes through the Suez Canal.

In the heart of Europe, where the Netherlands and Belgium converge, lies the peculiar town of Baarle. Divided into Baarle-Nassau (Dutch) and Baarle-Hertog (Belgian), this town of just under 10,000 people is a living testament to the European Union’s complexity and paradoxical nature. A Patchwork of Borders The international border crisscrosses through Baarle, marked by white crosses on the pavement, sometimes bisecting buildings, including the town hall. This division results in 22 Belgian enclaves within Dutch territory and six Dutch counter-enclaves within these Belgian enclaves.
