Whoa! My first podcast!! Thanks CCA for the opportunity to share my favorite topic, universal design and how it can benefit all students, not just a few. Controversial thought, educators disable students, not just those with disabilities, but all students, by building in unnecessary barriers into their curriculum. Why not build a more inclusive curriculum to actually provide students opportunity to demonstrate what they know, rather than penalizing them for what they can't control? As we consider the importance of admissions, retention and graduation we may need to rethink barriers that serve no educational purpose.

I totally agree with the points in this article and the findings/recommendations in the GAO report! All of my work is centered around supporting students with physical disabilities and health conditions with college preparation and transition. This includes assisting them in developing self advocacy skills, identifying accommodations, preparing them for conversations with the disability support office and professors, and assisting them in thinking through their needs well before they get to college. https://lnkd.in/dXuP2vmQ

Principal, special education directors, and school districts: Did you know that special education found its footing based on the Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954? This landmark decision laid the groundwork for equal educational opportunities, transcending to include students with disabilities. Subsequent legislative milestones, notably the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), have fortified the rights of students with special needs. Today, as we contemplate the progress achieved, let's steadfastly advocate for inclusive education, ensuring every learner has equitable access to a thriving educational environment. It’s noteworthy that the foundation for special education is inclusion. School is about to begin and all over social media, parents and guardians are scrambling to purchase the right supplies, buy clothes, register for extracurriculars, schedule hair appointments...all with the mindset of ensuring their child is prepared for school. Why...because we want our children to start with all of the tools they need to have a successful school year.
