Advocating for the protection of functional habitat is crucial, and it's heartening to see common sense prevail. Eight years ago, advocating for the protection of the Gnangara pine plantation to the Western Australian State Government for Carnaby's black cockatoo was shut down without any consideration of its merit. However, today, protecting pine plantations is finally seen as a viable option for conserving foraging habitat for the endangered Carnaby's black cockatoo with the ongoing loss and degradation of Banksia woodlands throughout the Swan Coastal Plain. This reaffirms the need for conservation actions to focus on restoring and protecting functional habitat in whatever form that takes.

Private Forest Accord Grant Program | Learn more at PFAgrants.com The ODFW Private Forest Accord (PFA) Grant Program is an incredible opportunity to move the dial toward conservation and recovery for some of Oregon’s most sensitive fish and amphibians. With significant investment from the State of Oregon and timber harvest tax revenue, the PFA Mitigation Fund will be capable of delivering nearly $15 million in conservation grants every year. Watershed-scale investments in projects like stream habitat restoration, removal of barriers to fish passage, cold water and flow protection, beaver-modified habitat creation, and more will create statewide benefits for the species covered by the PFA Habitat Conservation Plan and offset the potential impacts caused by forest practices on private lands. The investments will be big, the projects on the ground will be large, and the benefits to Oregon’s fish and wildlife will be huge. West Creek Conservancy in partnership with Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), Pheasants Forever, Ashtabula Soil & Water Conservation District (ASWCD) and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has now acquired 119 acres in the Village of Andover in Ashtabula County. The property is adjacent to Ashtabula County Metroparks’ Pymatuning Valley Greenway Trail and is only a single property removed from Pymatuning Lake State Park. Prior to the acquisition, the property contained approximately 97 acres of agricultural fields and row crops which have now been converted into 44 acres of wetlands, 26 acres of pollinator habitat and 27 acres of reforestation. In addition to the restoration efforts, 22 acres of existing mature hardwood forest have now been protected in perpetuity. Once the restoration is complete, we intend to make Andover Meadows open to the public for passive recreation. #AndoverMeadows #WestCreekConservancy #ProtectRestoreConnect
