Does language make things worse for people with disabilities? People who haven’t been exposed much to the disability world are often unaware of the consequences their words bear. Me included. (I’m still learning.) The examples below are phrases I’ve heard or even said very often before becoming aware of their impact on others. Since language, just like society itself, is ever-evolving, ableism should be a constant topic to make sure we’re using language correctly: to communicate, understand, and include, not to create barriers, differentness, and exclusion. The answer to this... ✨Ableism✨ Why are the needs of people with disabilities considered "special" or even "different" when having needs is fundamental to being human? The needs and accommodations for people with disabilities may be different than what able-bodied people are familiar with but they are just as "normal" to those of us with disabilities as the needs of anybody else. The lack of neutrality in the language commonly used when referring to disability reinforces the idea that disability means fragility or otherness. 🌟 Embracing Language and Respect in the Disability Community and Beyond 🌟 I recently came across an insightful article from NPR discussing a crucial topic: the language we use to refer to individuals with disabilities. This debate between "people-first" language ("people with disabilities") and "identity-first" language ("disabled people") is more than just semantics—it's about respect, identity, and inclusion. The article highlights that while "people-first" language aims to prioritize the individual before their disability, many in the disabled community prefer "identity-first" language as it acknowledges disability as a fundamental part of their identity and helps combat stigma. As we work towards a more inclusive and respectful society, it's vital to listen to and honor the preferences of those we aim to support. Understanding and adapting our language can significantly impact how we relate to and advocate for others. Let’s continue to educate ourselves and foster open conversations about language and inclusivity. I have pitched at many accessible travel conferences. I propose talks about website accessibility. because, you know, if you need accessibility in your travel, chances are you’re gonna need accessibility and looking up information about travel, and about booking travel and hotel. I pitched 17 conference talks to six different travel conferences over a period of three years. Not a single one was accepted. The four that gave me feedback said the conferences about physical travel, not websites. These people are so narrowly focused. You can’t look at accessibility only in silos. You have to look at end to end including digital assets related to physical structures.

We speak different languages, the people with disabilities, disability advocates and accessibility experts versus the policy makers both in government and business. Meding this gap, I'm stubborn enough to insist on easy language in all cases, even in compliance and policy related situations: Today I had an interesting conversation about language on an intranet page, probably recognizable for otherhers in the accessibility and disability field: My point of view: easy to read and understand explanation about governance and policy. So both, the policy makers and beneficiary can read and understand the policy, increases accountability. My colleague aimed for A2 level, which is indeed the level of governance, compliance, and legal professionals. Because this is the language level they expect. (In which my colleague is right) Unfortunately A2 level is hard to understand for many, including people with disabilities for who we are working on a day to day base. We must make these policy makers understand the importance to be understood, don't we? I believe it all comes back to transparency and accountability. That is why I hope all accessibility leads, accessibility policy makers, etc. join my corner and use easy to read text to support understanding of what we do for all people with and without disabilities 💪 #InclusiveLanguage is more than wording, it must also be about understandable language! #accessiblity #inclusion #disability #language #business #government #policy #compliance
