While they say that K-cups are not going away, Keurig is testing K-rounds which will hopefully become an more environmentally friendly alternative. After settling a 2018 lawsuit over how recyclable the cups really were, the company has worked to find an alternative. If you are unable to recycle the k-cups in your community, a mailback is being launched in late 2024, so be on the lookout to improve your recycling habits. More information is in the link below. Really interesting initiative but so confusing for Pizza Hut consumers. Here in the US even with grease, and lets face it a good pizza always comes with grease) the directive here suggests its still recyclable. We do wonder how many boxes actually do play a part in the current recyclate though? In other regions the stipulation is the box needs to be clean and free of residues and grease, which is mighty difficult in most take away situations.

Drake’s Brewing Company, one of the nation’s leading craft brewers, was on a mission to reduce their carbon footprint and enhance their sustainability efforts. During a consultation with RRD, they discovered that although their packaging was recyclable, it was made from virgin fiber instead of recycled board. Determined to make a positive change, Drake’s sought RRD’s expertise to transition their 6-, 12-, and 15-pack carrier packaging to recycled, responsibly sourced materials. With RRD's innovative packaging solutions, they found the perfect balance between eco-friendly practices and high-quality packaging. I absolutely love fabulous examples of how people respond when some location discontinues #recycling (usually of #glass) for dubious reasons! Here, when the local municipality discontinued glass recycling, a couple of residents took matters into their own hands. The couple in this 👇 article decided to figure out how not to landfill glass. Their solution? Make root beer. Then reuse all kinds of different bottles to package it! Reusing glass is one of the lowest-CO2 impact ways to package something anyway--and better than recycling. What an awesome, affirmative step to both send a message (people want to recycle glass--and practically everything else for that matter) and then do something about the municipality's misguided decision! #sustainability #chooseglass #circulareconomy https://lnkd.in/e_s4RWrW

Greenwashing is everywhere - and it is impossible to double check every claim one reads on the packaging of the products we purchase. In this context, it was interesting to see the SEC fine Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. $1.5 million over claims related to the recyclability of its coffee pods. Keurig had stated in its fiscal year 2019 and 2020 annual reports that its K-Cup coffee pods could be effectively recycled; however, major U.S. recycling companies expressed concerns and did not intend to accept the pods for recycling. Keurig agreed to pay the civil penalty to settle the SEC charges without admitting or denying the findings. The claims made by Keurig followed research indicating that consumers considered environmental concerns when deciding to purchase Keurig products. Keurig announced in 2020 that it had made 100% of its K-Cup pods recyclable by converting manufacturing lines to produce recyclable format pods made from polypropylene #5 plastic.

This is tricky. The combination of disposable cups and fast food, both of which came of age at about the same time, is a tough one to shake. (…and now I want a milkshake…) It can work beautifully in closed loop systems: cafeterias, concert venues, etc. But as soon as those cups are carried out the door, it all goes south. Who wants to haul around a dirty cup? One startup in the Midwest is pitching a scheme that links fast food containers to customers and will send out email reminders for returns. From their website: “Customers check out reusables from participating operators for free and receive text message reminders to return them. Souvenir fees are applied for reusables not returned after two weeks.” Holy moly. I would so pay NOT to do this. Think about it: the clamshell for your salad, the cup for your drink, linked to you and your credit card. What could go wrong? And if the company goes public, woudn’t it be the fiduciary thing to sell the data to marketers? Everything we do is now a data point. When a big company with deep pockets such as AT&T cannot protect my data from going out on the dark web, how I am supposed to feel good about the data security of a random reusable cup service? I actually wrote to the startup via their website with my concerns. They are a young company that wants to make the world better. Which is why I am not naming them. But it has been a couple of weeks and I am still waiting for a reponse… PR3 has the right idea about standards and convenience. Perhaps Reuse bins next to Recycle bins next to Trashbins? It’s lot of bins. But maybe worth a try. https://lnkd.in/gty_GAsD #plastics Ryan Jeffery Chicago Climate Connect #garbage #reuse #reusables

Keurig's new K-Rounds are here, ditching plastic and aiming for a greener cup. Going plastic-free is a massive leap towards reducing landfill, a win for our environment. Here's the exciting part: these coffee pucks are wrapped in a compostable outer layer. While details on home vs industrial composting are still emerging (a crucial aspect in waste management), this shift signifies Keurig's commitment to a more sustainable future. But the journey doesn't end there! Eliminating the plastic cups brings new challenges. The secondary packaging now needs to ensure the K-Rounds: - Survive the journey: No one wants crushed coffee grounds! - Stay fresh and clean: Maintaining quality is key. - Communicate flavour: Helping you choose your perfect cup. I’m curious to see how Keurig tackles this next step. Perhaps a packaging that aids in home composting the used pods? or packaging made from used molded coffee grounds? More innovative and exciting packaging solutions are on the horizon! What are your thoughts on the K-Rounds? #SustainablePackaging #Keurig #Krounds

Productivity at a cost: The lunacy of telling consumers it is eco- friendly to turn glass bottles into trash. According to this article ‘In 1900, a full 100% of beverages in the U.S. utilised a refillable bottle system. But mechanisation created the use once and pitch policy that defines our beverage consumption cycle now—as of now, less than 2% of bottling is done in refillable containers.
Does a sustainable wine bottle really exist?
