AERIAL DISTRIBUTION NETWORK EQUIPMENT – RAD BREAKING VOLTAGE OR DIELECTRIC STRENGTH Every insulating body has a distinct characteristic due to its chemical composition where it reaches the insulating threshold and becomes a conductor, this characteristic is called Dielectric Strength. The applied voltage that causes this body to change from an insulator to a conductor is called Breakdown Voltage. Breakdown voltage is accelerated by certain factors, which are: - Time of exposure to bad weather - Working voltage - Overvoltage in the system - Material fatigue - Presence of impurities - Others Dielectric strength is a very important physical property of materials, as it also defines the largest electric field that such a material can withstand, without sparks and electrical discharges capable of damaging it. Breakdown of dielectric strength occurs when the external electric field applied to a dielectric is large enough for that material to stop being an electrical insulator and become a conductor of electricity. It is also the moment when a given insulating material becomes a conductor. – that is, it loses its specific properties and starts to act differently. We also have the Dielectric Constant, which has nothing to do with Dielectric Strength, which is defined based on the ratio of the electrical permittivity of a medium to the electrical permittivity of the vacuum. This property is applied to capacitors, since the aim is to insert media with large dielectric constants between their plates, thus increasing their capacitance. #linesman #electrician #technician

What are Alternators ? Check out the caption below 👇 An alternator is a crucial component in a vehicle's electrical system, responsible for converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. This device operates by using a rotating magnetic field to induce an alternating current (AC) in a set of stationary windings. The alternator is typically driven by the engine's crankshaft via a belt, which causes the rotor (a magnet or electromagnet) inside the alternator to spin. As the rotor spins, it generates a magnetic field that passes through the stator windings, creating an electrical current. This current is initially AC, but most vehicle systems require direct current (DC). To address this, the alternator is equipped with a rectifier, a set of diodes that convert AC to DC. The alternator also includes a voltage regulator to ensure a consistent voltage level, protecting the vehicle's electrical components from damage due to voltage fluctuations. This video is going to be Part 3 of 8 in a series which will go over the similarities and differences between insulation resistance testing and contact resistance testing. In this video I will talk about how to perform insulation resistance testing on a simulated 3 phase "Bus". The verbiage from NETA for testing bus is "Perform insulation resistance tests on each busway for one minute, phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground." The verbiage from NETA for testing wire (cables) is "Perform an insulation-resistance test on each phase/conductor with all other phases/conductors grounded." Both tests are looking for the same values. We are looking for the insulation test values between every conductor and between every conductor and ground. There are several ways to skin a cat here, but this is the gist of it. Stay tuned for more in this series!
