80 people, including apprentices, are involved in the work, where VIKING is developing new technology enabling Hugin A to be periodically unmanned.
The company is one of over 250 suppliers in Norway delivering directly to Aker BP's ongoing major project portfolio.
I have overhauled a Rolls Royce Engine before!!! 💪 During my internship, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the maritime industry aboard one of our company's vessels, the "Perdana Traveller." The journey led me to the ST Engineering yard in Tuas, Singapore, where I spent an enriching 1 and 1/2 months.
At the heart of this experience was my involvement in the main engine overhaul team. Working alongside seasoned professionals like Benyamin and under the leadership of Ah Soon, a main engine specialist, was both challenging and rewarding. Ah Soon's dedication, coupled with his stash of energy drinks, kept us going through the rigorous process. At times, tackling challenging tasks solo during the overhauling process could be quite daunting, especially when dealing with heavy engine components like removing the cylinder block. In such moments, I didn't hesitate to seek guidance from my seniors. Thankfully, with their assistance and by some stroke of luck, everything proceeded smoothly. It's common in the maritime industry to encounter hurdles, and reaching out for help when needed is part of the learning curve.
But my involvement didn't stop there. After completing the main engine overhaul, I eagerly joined the auxiliary engine team. These engines, crucial for generating electrical energy, were manufactured by Caterpillar. Diving into the intricacies of their operation further broadened my skill set.
Yet, my responsibilities extended beyond engines. Repairing valves, maintaining pumps, and ensuring the smooth operation of various systems across the vessel were all part of my role. From centrifugal pumps to gear pumps, the learning curve was steep, but every challenge brought invaluable knowledge.
In addition, I honed my lubricating skills, learned the importance of precision in every task, and prioritized safety working practices. Part handling became second nature as I navigated the intricacies of marine engineering.
Sure, my coveralls may have been perpetually drenched in diesel, but the hands-on experience and insights gained about rotating equipment made it all worthwhile.

Being in the Marine Industry has it's perks. Most of the time your office is a Super Yacht (which 99.9% of the population would never get access to), you get to travel to exclusive destinations, you get to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. Plus you can start right out of Highschool without incurring student loans that you'll have to pay off for the rest of your life. you know I sit here everyday trying to figure out what would've been the next day 5 years from now, because I find it interesting thinking of "what if?", "what if I hadn't applied for that program", "what if I hadn't gone to Finland" or "what if hadn't gone to Jamaica", so many what ifs I can come up with. It's one thing I've learned about myself, I always used excuses to escape the barrier I visualized would be the sure denial of such an honored journey, to not only represent your College, but also your Community and Country. thanks to Global Skills Opportunity starting up a pilot project that encourages in breaking barriers down, I have learned to be more confident, I've learned to be more cultural sensitive, cultural aware and so many more that will benefit me in the work place. I've become a new person in my mind that I believe this program can help many more like myself. out of the program I've also received two certificates of internship, one at keskusautohally oy and another thru MMBC (Montego Bay Community College). I am learning more and more everyday thanks to all mindset I have set for myself now trying to figure more fancy ways of wording things because honestly, I'm a automotive technician not really one who seeks out big words or as I call em fancy but, after my experiences it's also given me an added mindset of never limit yourself you never know what opportunities are lurking around the corner. on the side of my passion for the automotive game, I've learned that even a automotive technician can be inspiring as long as you're willing to explore programs like the student mobility program so I find it very crucial that this program be continued as I want the same possibility for my sons who are growing up and asking about college now. Just because they see the things I'm doing. I also believe in myself more as to being selected as an GSO Ambassador to represent this program, where there are also 14 other representatives whom I find help me scale up my story telling and speeches.
p.s: a day tomorrow five years from now if I hadn't taken the chance on GSO I would be at my shop on a tuesday checking the schedule with a peice of paper that says I been to college no accreditation or red seal just a shop with a paper.
