It is July, which means I have another anniversary with Blue Origin. Four years, two as a contractor and the last two as an FTE (Full Time Employee). But I didn't look for a job at Blue, Blue found me after tragic circumstances. I was contacting with an aircraft employer in Tulsa, Oklahoma during 2019-2020. Everything was going smooth until March 2020, COVID hit Tulsa, and in April contractors got it first. My first thought was, "Here we go again, unemployed." A month later Sheldon Brown called me and asked if I was available? Send me your resume, we can use your talents here at Blue Origin, "I know a guy", Sheldon said to me. I used to work for Sheldon, glad he remembered me. That guy Sheldon was talking about was Randy Wilson, Sr. Manager of Should Cost Estimating. He signed me up for a six-month contract and set me to work cost estimating specialty valves. Randy must have liked my output for the contact kept getting extended. The whole department expanded rapidly by early 2023 and Sandesh Shetty was the new "Boss" of an expanded scope of operations, Product Cost Optimization. He took pity on me and offered a full-time job. I think he liked my work and the costing programs I wrote. I am very grateful to be able to work and interact with a bunch of fantastic engineers, estimators and the programs that we collaborate on. Never a dull moment and the best engineering gig I ever had. What can be cooler than working with rocket engines and the vehicle that the engine propels through space? For a guy, as a kid, messing with Estes rockets this is a riot. Looking for more excitement in the coming months.

Are you preparing or thinking about submitting your Express Entry application? Here’s the top mistake to avoid: one that I almost fell for myself a few years ago! One of the most common (and costly) mistakes applicants make is choosing the wrong NOC (National Occupational Classification). It sounds simple, but trust me, it can get confusing! A couple of years after my own application, while studying to become an immigration consultant, I learned just how complex this decision can be. Luckily for me, I happened to choose the right NOC, even though I didn’t realize at the time that I had different options. For example, as a civil engineer, some of my tasks could have aligned with a job title that doesn’t even exist in my home country – civil engineering technician. Here are some quick tips to ensure you choose the right NOC: 🔍 Focus on duties, not titles: Match your job responsibilities to the NOC description rather than relying solely on your job title. 🔄 Consider overlapping roles: Your tasks may align with multiple NOC codes. Choose the one that best matches your core duties. 💡 Seek professional advice: If in doubt, consulting with a professional can prevent errors that may impact your application. Avoiding these common mistakes can save you time, stress, and improve your chances of a successful application. 💬 What’s your biggest question about the NOC process? What job platforms do you recommend? Asking for a friend who looks a lot like me… I’ve mainly used LinkedIn for searching for jobs, primarily because the results it gives back are in line with what I’m actually searching for. Other job boards seem to be poorer, at least in my experience, at giving relevant jobs. For example, searching for software engineering manager or head of engineering on other job boards seems to show me a tonne of offshore wind-farm engineer roles which I can confidently say I would never do (mainly for the fear of large open waters). #jobhunt #softwaredeveloper #newjob #jobsearch

🎓 Received a wave of graduation party invites lately and it got me thinking about the bright minds stepping into the next chapter. For those unsure about their path, here are some career avenues worth exploring from my point of view: 1. Soil Consultant: Dive into environmental science and make a tangible impact. VERY large shortage of personnel here in Indiana in this field. 2. Surveyors: Combine tech and outdoor work in this field, crucial for urban planning, construction, and mapping. 3. HVAC Technicians: With a growing demand for climate control systems, this profession offers stability and hands-on work. 4. Electricians: Power up your career with skills in electrical systems, essential for homes, businesses, and infrastructure. 5. Small Business Ownership: Consider buying/taking over a turnkey business from retiring Gen Xers. It's hard work, but with dedication, it can be incredibly rewarding. & you’d be surprised at how many would consider seller financing 💭 Each path offers unique opportunities for growth and success. Let's empower the next generation with options to pave their own way to a fulfilling career. 🚀🌟
