Advancements in HIV/AIDS Treatment and Prevention Significant progress has been made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, with advancements in treatment and prevention offering hope for ending the epidemic. Antiretroviral therapy \(ART\) has transformed HIV from a fatal disease into a manageable chronic condition, improving the quality of life and life expectancy for millions of people living with HIV. Prevention strategies, including pre-exposure prophylaxis \(PrEP\) and comprehensive sexual education, have been effective in reducing new HIV infections. Increasing access to these preventive measures, parti... https://lnkd.in/d9tT8X_B #HIVAIDS >>>Read full article by clicking the link below...

Very important analysis on sustainability of HIV responses. The point about the role of external assistance in setting agendas is key. Funders and technical partners have become increasingly assertive and directive about what HIV programmes should look like and this has disempowered national decision-making and management capacity. The primary role of capacity building has tended to focus on making implementers capable of fulfilling funder conditions. So even if (big if) the financial gaps are plugged the systems gaps are likely to remain for some time.
HIV programme sustainability in Southern and Eastern Africa and the changing role of external assistance for health Abigail H Neel and others; Health Policy and Planning, Volume 39, Issue Supplement_1, January 2024, Pages i107–i117, https://lnkd.in/ddj-PB-8 High human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–prevalence countries in Southern and Eastern Africa continue to receive substantial external assistance (EA) for HIV programming, yet countries are at risk of transitioning out of HIV aid without achieving epidemic control. We sought to address two questions: (1) to what extent has HIV EA in the region been programmed and delivered in a way that supports long-term sustainability and (2) how should development agencies change operational approaches to support long-term, sustainable HIV control? Our respondents described HIV systems’ vulnerability to donor departure, as well as how development partner priorities and practices have created challenges to promoting long-term HIV control.

@AIDS2024 this week, HIV prevention technologies, including injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are in the spotlight, renewing hope in reversing new HIV infections globally. Our Palladium: Make It Possible colleague Airaoje Ojemeiri presented research on a cohort of more than 50,000 individuals in Nigeria, analyzing trends in oral PrEP adherence and discontinuation. The rich analyses shows lower discontinuations of oral PrEP for key populations vs the general population, while validating the need for additional biomedical HIV prevention options in Nigeria and globally.

📊 New MMWR data suggest that distributing HIV self-tests by mail is an effective way to reach those who have never been tested or are not testing as often as recommended. 🌍📬 HIV testing is vital for prevention and treatment, leading to a 12% drop in infections from 2018 to 2022. However, access disparities remain. To address this, the CDC-funded Emory University and its partners, Building Healthy Online Communities (BHOC), OraSure Technologies, Signal Group, and NASTAD, launched the Together TakeMeHome (#TTMH) program, distributing 443,813 HIV self-tests by mail over the past year. Targeting key groups disproportionately affected by HIV, TTMH reached 219,360 individuals, with 68% from priority audiences, 24% who had never tested before, and 25% who hadn’t tested in the past year. This initiative highlights the effectiveness of mail-based self-testing. Read the full MMWR report here: https://lnkd.in/gFkZvhkn #NHTD #HIVTesting #PublicHealth

Australian Federal Government supports public health adoption of HIV Self-Testing To mark World AIDS Day, a report from Australia’s HIV Taskforce led by the Health Minister, the Hon. Mark Butler and Assistant Health Minister, the Hon. Ged Kearney, has been released, charting a path to ending HIV transmission by the end of this decade. The Taskforce recognises for the first time the critical role HIV self-testing plays in enabling Australia to reach this ambitious target and is clear in terms of requirements. ‘The Australian Government and state and territory governments should partner on initiatives to remove barriers, expand access to, and promote the use of, the self-testing and POCT options that are already available’. ‘The Atomo HIV Self-Test is extremely accurate, correctly identifying 99.6% of HIV negative and HIV positive samples in laboratory testing.’ - Australian HIV Taskforce Report, 30th November 2023 As the only organisation with a HIV Self-Test that has met the stringent requirements of the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and been approved for supply in Australia, Atomo has always been committed to the LGBTIQ+ community, as we are equally committed to supporting the Australian Government in reaching its 2030 goals. The company anticipates that the adoption of HIV Self-Testing into national HIV policy will lead to increased deployment of Atomo’s test by public health partners in Australia. Atomo is especially proud to be perceived as such a crucial player in the enormous task of virtually eliminating HIV in Australia. Read the HIV Taskforce Report here: https://lnkd.in/gekzK5EA

#Ukraine has the second largest population of people living with #HIV in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region. To strengthen HIV care, the country is prioritizing the delivery of a guaranteed package of services at the #primaryhealthcare level. The potential of these reforms to improve HIV service delivery is huge because they #PutPeopleFirst. People living with or at risk of HIV will be able to access high-quality prevention and treatment services that are closer to home and integrated with the other health services they already access. However, are #PHC facilities and providers—typically a person’s first point of contact with the health system—ready to offer person-centered HIV services? And if not, what do they need to get there? PATH traveled the country to find out. https://lnkd.in/gZT8MKAX
