Principal Social Worker and Specialist in Participation and Co-design. #RelationalActivism and relational cultures in human services.
Community co-design in child protection is a vital step towards building strength-based and collaborative social work practices. But, where do we begin? Wendell Berry's concept of community underlines the importance of mutual knowledge, concern, trust, and freedom. And, organising a coffee morning is a practical way to establish relationships and begin a dialogue. However, the role of professionals in this context becomes a point of discussion. Fostering relationships and moving beyond conventional feedback mechanisms is essential. Community co-design in child protection requires a shift from a professional-majority voices default to a community-balanced dialogue. This transformation signifies a deeper engagement and distribution of responsibilities in child protection, aiming for a more collaborative, empowering, and culturally resonant approach. Let's work together to create a community that is based on mutual knowledge, concern, trust, and freedom. March shines a light on Social Work Month! Today, we're spotlighting Lisa Richards Ryan, LSW! Unit, title, years of experience? Office of Intake and Emergency Services District Manager 27 years What do you do at the Department? I am the District Manager of the Office of Intake and Emergency Services on St. Croix. As a Social Worker/District Manager, it is important to have many characteristic traits, such as honesty, empathy, effective communication skills, being non-biased, as well as being a good listener. Who does your unit help? Intake is a unit that functions under the guidelines of Title 5 of the Virgin Islands Code, mandating that this unit protects the children of our community from abuse as well as neglect. Why is it important? Social Workers are public servants who are dedicated to ensuring that the children of our community are safe in their environments. Why would other social workers want to come work at DHS? Working with the Department of Human Services has allowed me to be exposed to so many families that need assistance. This work has also allowed me to grow and develop the skills and experience necessary to become a better person, not only for myself but also for others.

Project Director at S.M.A.R.T. Foundation - also known as: Legin Nyleve, LeginNyleve and @l3gin on other Social Media
Of course, I know it can be difficult to discuss perceivably personal things with parents / carers as, we all think we are the only one's to experience growing-up pains and easier to talk to a stranger / third party but, what has happened to family interpersonal relationships over the decades !? The post pubescent "Kevin" phase when "no-one knows noffink" about their 'teenage life and struggles' is sort of standard yet, little appreciation when you continue to rescue them stuck somewhere in the early hours of the morning when dumped by friends and no busses or money for taxi or even delivered home by the Police as a minor, maybe more than once....... Soooo, is it the judgmental attitudes of other, approval deprivation by parents or school or perceived peer pressure to conform or join-in with stupid is as stupid does activities or late development of positive self-image, self-esteem and self-worth failing to support self-advocacy of being who you are as a unique individual and part of a sub-community? https://lnkd.in/e3Wi_2rc

Do Social Care Workers Get the Respect They Deserve? This month, we’re joining Skills for Care in #CelebratingSocialCare and the incredible people who work in care. And, in the middle of the social work crisis, it’s time that we all reflect on the challenges and responsibilities these people face and whether they are getting the respect they deserve. Support workers have the unique opportunity to play a vital role in the lives of people with any kind of physical, neurodevelopmental or mental health differences. Their capability to commit wholeheartedly to the people they support is crucial to nurturing independence, well-being and active social engagement in the community. What people might not know is that social workers go above and beyond to build genuine, profound and high-quality relationships with the people they serve. Their potential to turn challenges into opportunities makes a life-changing difference for autistic people, people with learning disabilities and mental health needs. The term ‘carer’ suggests a person who provides care and support to people, assisting them with personal care, feeding, dressing, and maintaining healthy and meaningful daily life routines. Support workers are genuinely committed to breaking down barriers and stigma in society, empowering people to feel heard, valued and included in the community. So, let’s take a look at a day in the life of a support worker and how they play a pivotal role in empowering people to achieve their personal goals. https://lnkd.in/dNTSXwk8 #socialcare #socialwork
