💙🤍❤️I can't vote in the US,
...but the sheer global power of this country - its being the greatest political, economic and financial power - turns their elections into domestic politics for all citizens of the world. So, I feel I can tell my U. S. friends what we on this side of the pond, think about the Republican primaries.
The US, despite all the dark sides that being a super power (be it colonialism, slavery or aggressive trade wars), brings with itself, has in the past 200 years drawn its prosperity to a great degree from upholding 'humanist', 'modernist' or 'western' values - things like secularism, democracy, freedom of speech, thought and religion; individual liberty, citizens' rights, fairness, accessibility of justice FOR ALL, equality of all humans; rule of law, common sense, ideals, but not ideologies; academic and scientific progress, innovations and entreprenial spirit. And most importantly the right to seek a good life or 'the pursuit of happiness'.
Being Iranian, I can't help but add (leaning on the historian and Iranist, Prof Holland) that the US is not only the modern and democratic descendent of the Roman Empire and it's idea of FORZA ('I am because I can wield power!'), but also the child of the Persian Zoroasterian idea that an Empire should be a moral entity; that is, where Good can be installed by the super power.
In order to do be a force of Good, you need reflection, self-reflection and the ability to look at yourself critically; you need to love yourself and yet be able to examine, criticise, change and make good your mistakes. In one word, to re-invent yourself without losing your 'original' self. Here again, my Iranian self pops up and reminds me of Rumi's tenet that every change or progress is only valuable if it takes you back to your true origins.
The United States' ability to use the concept of change and progress as the main tool for upholding the humanist values upon which it founded itself, gave birth (and sustenance) to a culture, or what we call a 'soft power' that has in the past 75 years not been surpassed by any other Super Power - be it in the West or East or South or North. The prosperity of this country comes from that culture.
Republicans, too, can modernise and re-invent their party by linking it back to what it was - a broad church where Conservatives and Liberals lived side by side to protect American interests.
The US citizens understandably have a different viewpoint than the rest of the world citizens, for whom American elections and politics are domestic politics. The priorities of US citizens are in some points different than ours. I can only say that from where I am looking in Europe, #nikkihaley looks like a viable candidate.
