International Air Transport Association (IATA): Cabin safety is a key area impacting operational safety. Historically, the safety role of cabin crew was seen as limited to post-accident evacuations. Although this remains an important and essential duty of cabin crew, today the safety role of cabin crew goes much further. Cabin crew contribute to safe, effective, and efficient operations in normal, abnormal, and emergency situations. They play an important role in preventing serious incidents and accidents, including (but not limited to) events such as in-flight fires, unruly passengers, depressurization, and turbulence. It is for this reason that IATA focuses on cabin safety and continues to develop standards and recommended practices to ensure safety in all aspects of cabin operations. IATA’s Cabin Operations Safety Best Practices Guide provides a central reference source for industry best practices, sample policies and procedures as well as recommended practices and regulations such as ICAO's Annex 6 relating to the delivery of safe and efficient cabin operations. Managing luggage is an essential responsibility for cabin crew to ensure passenger safety, comfort, and compliance with airline policies. Here are some key aspects of how cabin crew manage luggage: ******** Pre-Boarding 1. **Gate Checks**: Cabin crew coordinate with ground staff to gate-check larger carry-ons if the flight is full or if the aircraft has limited overhead bin space. 2. **Announcements**: Inform passengers about carry-on size limits and advise them to check larger bags and amount of bags to go into the cabin, so you can avoid any delays. ******** Boarding 1. **Greeting and Monitoring**: Cabin crew greet passengers and monitor the size and number of their carry-on items as they board. 2. **Assistance**: Help passengers to organize their luggage efficiently to maximize space in overhead bins and under seats. Do not lift the passengers bags as it may cause serious injuries. 3. **Safety Checks**: Ensure luggage is stored securely to prevent movement during takeoff, turbulence, and landing. ******** During the Flight 1. **Reorganization**: Cabin crew may rearrange items in the overhead bins to accommodate more luggage or make space for passengers boarding later. 2. **Passenger Requests**: Assist passengers in accessing their bags during the flight if necessary. ******** Before Landing 1. **Final Checks**: Ensure all carry-on items are securely stowed for landing. This includes making sure bags are not blocking aisles or emergency exits. 2. **Announcements**: Remind passengers to gather their belongings and check overhead bins carefully. ******** Deplaning 1. **Assistance**: Help passengers if needed to find their luggage in the cabin and instruct them where their are in order to be collected by the passengers. 2. **Left Items**: Check for any items left behind and manage lost and found procedures. ******** General Best Practices 1. **Safety First**: Prioritize safety by ensuring luggage is properly stowed and does not pose a hazard. 2. **Efficiency**: Utilize space efficiently and handle luggage quickly to keep boarding and deplaning processes smooth. 3. **Communication**: Maintain clear communication with passengers regarding luggage policies and storage procedures. It’s not your responsibility to lift their bags but to assist them all the time. By following these procedures, cabin crew ensure a safer and more comfortable travel experience for all passengers.

In Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, he writes how communications, or the lack thereof, impacts commercial airline safety. He shares how in commercial airlines, there is always pilot and a first officer who share the duties of flying the aircraft. While both are qualified to fly the aircraft, the pilot has more experience and seniority. Interestingly, studies have shown that crashes are much more likely to occur when the pilot is at the controls and much less likely to happen when the first officer at the controls.  Which means that flights are statistically significantly safer when the least experienced person is operating the plane. Why is that? It’s because of communication and vulnerability. Reviewing the audio of crashes, the FAA discovered that the less experienced, lower-ranking first officer is much less likely to feel empowered to speak up when they observe something amiss than the more experienced, higher-ranking pilot. What they heard when the pilot was in control, the first officer didn’t effectively communicate issues to the pilot. Conversely, the pilots were much more proactive in alerting the first officers to issues. For example, the pilot might note things like “There’s too much ice on the plane. You need to request de-icing before take-off.” An active, and actionable, statement. However, the first officer’s statements in the same situation were more passive, “Looks like more ice than usual…” The fears lower ranking people have around speaking up are not limited to the airline industry. Many organizations have a culture where speaking up is not welcomed and in some cases, considered a career limiting move (CLM). However, the lower ranking employees are on your front lines. They interact all day, every day with your products, your processes, your applications. They often field calls from and troubleshoot for your clients. Their insights can be the ones that keep your organizational plane in the air. How can organizations fix this issue? Airlines implemented training, requiring junior officers to use specific language when they identify an issue. They are trained to disregard comfort issues, using escalating phrases such as, “Captain, I’m concerned about …” and escalating to “Captain, I believe the situation is unsafe…” and ultimately taking over control if the captain isn’t responding. These protocols empower lower ranking officers to communicate effectively, and many experts believe have contributed to the dramatic decline in airline crashes – more than any technological advances. Organizations can implement similar protocols so that it can quickly respond to issues that will bring down its business.  Open door policies and town hall meetings aren’t enough. Employees need to be empowered and to see leadership respond to build trust in the process. #communication #employeeengagement #leadership #internalcommunication #agility #culture

Can't believe Mary Schlangenstein was bamboozled into this story. Okay I'm going to say this again: The single level of safety rule from the 90s had NOTHING TO DO WITH SAFETY. It was an underhanded trick by Air Line Pilots Association to close the operating cost gap between mainlines and regionals. Laughably, ALPA always thought regionals stole their jobs and for that reason has been playing politics with safety, which is inexcusable. The fact is since the 1980s when airlines tapped regionals to capture pax at point of origin they no longer served they were able to build fortress hubs which allowed the airlines to grow and create more pilot jobs. Regionals did NOT take pilot jobs, they enabled the growth of more mainline jobs! Yes, they paid crap and I condemn them for that but that, as ALPA has proved is a matter of supply and demand. The shortage we have is not now is not because of the 1500-hour rule, it is because of 9/11 and the Great Recession which lost us 2 generations of pilots. There is NO SAFETY ISSUE with on-demand charter and ALPA is quite happy when its own member airlines use the rule. It, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and the airlines are on a publicity campaign of their own because they, um, don't like competition. We're deregulation so that's just tough, boys. All the single level of safety rule did was to raise costs so high we lost a ton of top bread-and-butter regional markets to the national air transportation grid for NO improvement in safety. It arose out of four accidents in 1994 two regionals and two mainlines. Mainlines got a pass from ALPA. Without public charter we'll remove more points. Even Chuck Schumer supports Contour Airlines serve because it serves small NY points and without it, his constituents would lose service. Fast forward to the 1500-hour rule and ALPA did the same thing. There was NO SAFETY BENEFIT to the rule and, in fact, it was detrimental to safety. Don't believe me, do your homework talk to mainline airline trainers and Flight Safety Foundation, and 100s of ALPA's own members who decry its policies and say it dilutes safety. ALPA doesn't like changing the age 65 rule because it might increase the pilot population a scosh. We need a science-based rule. That's politics about pay not safety. The fact is we are facing another 12-15 years of shortage of pilots and amts. ALPA IS NOT A SAFETY MEDIATOR, it is a union working to increase dues. The real safety mediators are airline training pros, royal aeronautical society and safety investigors. NTSB has always maintained hours are a pour metric for pilot quality and it is right. Curious, JSX is part of United Airlines #aviate pathway programs so it must be doing something right to have survived that vetting. Summer in aviation as a Ground Handler: P.O.V - Passenger Service Department Preparing for the busy summer season as a Ground Handler in the passenger service department requires meticulous planning and a proactive approach. As we approach the summer season and after experiencing a few summer seasons with a Ground Handler in the Passenger Service department, I’ve experienced a few bit of both the best and the strenuous periods and we could agree that the Summer Period in the aviation industry could be somewhat interesting. This therefore has had me pondering on what better steps and procedures to put into place in the future that could probably ensure a smoother busy summer schedule. I’ve put together some steps which I believe could foster a smooth operation: 1. Staffing and Training Hire Seasonal Staff: Ensure you have adequate staff to handle the increased passenger volume. Training & Cross-Training: Provide staff with adequate refresher courses & train them to handle multiple roles to ensure flexibility. 2. Scheduling and Shift Management Optimized Scheduling: Create efficient schedules to cover peak hours while managing staff fatigue. Shift Overlaps: Implement overlapping shifts to ensure seamless handovers during peak periods. 3. Supplies & Inventory Management Stock up on essential supplies like baggage tags, boarding passes etc. 4. Communication and Coordination Disseminating of on-time & accurate information through the officially provided modes to keep staff informed and coordinated. 5. Passenger Assistance and Experience Signage and Information: Ensure clear signage and information desks are well-staffed to assist passengers. Special Needs: Prepare to assist passengers with special needs by coordinating with relevant support services. 6. Crowd Management (Check-In & Boarding Area) Queue Management: Use barriers and clear signage to manage queues effectively. 7. Safety and Security Security Protocols: Review and reinforce security protocols to handle increased passenger traffic securely. 8. Technology and Systems System Upgrades: Ensure all IT systems and software for check-in and baggage handling are up to date. Backup Plans: Have contingency plans for system failures or disruptions. 9. Health and Safety It is always important to follow health regulations for cleanliness, particularly with high traffic touch points. First Aid: Ensure first aid stations are well-equipped and staff are trained to handle medical emergencies. 10. Customer Feedback Feedback Mechanisms: Implement methods for passengers to provide feedback to identify and address issues quickly. Proactive Service: Empower staff to resolve issues on the spot to enhance passenger satisfaction.
