A safety plan can and does help some people who are feeling suicidal. It usually consists of several parts and is used in healthcare settings. One aspect teaches the person to recognize their warning signs that they are in trouble. It helps them to identify ways to stay safe, establish anchors for living, and who to call before they act on their thoughts. It can and does save some lives. Remind yourself that in many cases a person who is feeling suicidal does not necessarily want to die, they want their emotional pain to end.
