There is a job advertisement I recently came across, and it has this below as one of its requirements:
"Minimum of twenty (20) years of general experience in construction and supervision, designing and managing multi-disciplinary projects, contract administration, and supervision of projects."
So, I just did some simple, rough calculations, focusing on the Tanzanian context. With that requirement, in Tanzania, you are looking for a person with a minimum age of 42 years.
If that person studied straight (did not get stuck or repeat a class) from standard one at the age of 7 years and completed a 3-year degree at around 22 years, the assumption here is that he got a job immediately, the same year of graduation, and that first job was in the construction and supervision settings, and he also manages multi-disciplinary projects, contract administration, and supervision of projects. He worked here or in this field for 20 years from his graduation year, which makes him around 42 years old or more.
So, I then wonder: Did they stop to think about this when preparing this job description, or perhaps they want an elderly person?
I think they might be missing great, young, and talented candidates here. This is just me thinking out loud.
Dear recruiters, can you please explain or comment on this?
