📖 Author of 'Designing Creative Communities' | Facilitator | Community Builder I Founder of My Creative Community, 3 Dots, the co.space, & New Leaf
That’s a wrap! The VISN 10 Innovation and Improvement Summit in Ann Arbor was a blast! Well over 100 leaders and frontline innovators came together for a 3 day gathering to explore ways to strengthen collaboration opportunities across 11 VA sites in the region. I never pass by an opportunity to introduce a new group to participatory tools like Liberating Structures and World Cafe. But the fan favorite was hands down Open Space on the final day. We had 25 topics that the group dove into - everything from surgical innovations to electronic health record improvements to marketing and rebranding efforts - all identified by the group themselves There’s nothing better than standing in front of a group with a completely blank agenda behind me and inviting them into the pregnant pause before the first topics are shared. But once a few attendees start sharing, a line of ‘hosts’ emerge. For my Open Space sessions, I love building the agenda grid with large rolls of paper and black tape. Then I have laminated signs for the different locations (which are organized by color and letters) and each of these has a corresponding flag that hosts grab and move around the room to the spot they want to meet. It’s simple but amazing how much colorful flags (and tons of natural light) impact a group. One attendee remarked “this is nothing like the sensory deprivation chambers that most conferences are held in.” I’ll consider that a win ;) But more importantly, I’m always inspired to hear when participants come up to me afterwards and share that they are excited to use some of these techniques in their meetings when they get back home. That’s the real win!! When people feel empowered to shake up the way they typically organize people so as to more fully tap into the wisdom of their crowd. That’s how collaboration and innovation flourish. #facilitator #facilitation #participatory #openspace #artofhosting #liberatingstructures #veterans #vha #innovation #experiencedesign #events #conferences #connection

Surgeon. I'm deploying capital, delivering care, and building community in Central Texas. All opinions are my own.
My #jpm2024 takeaways are for those thinking about going for the first time... short answer: - if you're interested in the health/tech space, check it out at least once longer answer: - 🎟 you don't need to get the formal conference pass (most people don't) - 🛏 you do need to find a place to stay early (SF gets crazy!) - 🤝 it's very helpful to go with someone who's been several times so they can help you navigate the immense amount of activity...Zain Kazmi played that role for me! 🙏🏽 🙏🏽 🙏🏽 🙏🏽 🙏🏽 - make your agenda before hand - combination of 1:1 meetings, private receptions, and open mixers - you can get into many "private" events through existing connections - don't worry about meeting the biggest names - think about what (and more importantly who) would be meaningful for you and why - 👟 wear comfortable shoes - ☔ prep for the rain (rain jacket / umbrella / shoes that can get wet) - get in touch with people who are trying to get where you are, those who are doing what you do, and those who you want to be like in the future - they're all gonna be there - when you get back - don't forget to follow-up! What worked for y'all at JPM? Who's thinking about going next year? Why or why not? Oh and massive shout out to Rebecca Mitchell, MD for organizing the (first?) Clinicians who VC JPM meet-up! A real highlight of the conference for me :).
