Founder @ Storyboard PM (See "About") - Transformational Project Management (Individuals | Teams | Organizations)
How can Operational Managers get the most out of extra projects assigned to them? Functional Managers are not Project Managers, and yet they are often asked to manage projects on top of their daily operations. It's not the best use of your company's resources... Neither activity gets the full attention it deserves from its Manager. Functional Managers are not as good at project management as Project Managers and Project Managers are not as good at functional management as Functional Managers are. And your teams don't learn, grow, and progress as well as they could in becoming better leaders, managers, and teammates unless the work is properly structured and assigned. (What do you think? Comment below) Organizational Steering Committees should appoint Project Managers and teams that function alongside ongoing Operations in the Organizational Structure for the length of the project. Project Managers should then work with Functional Managers to negotiate time needed on projects from subject experts who still work in both areas. Functional Managers should delegate Project Management to someone else on their team if the organization is just giving them projects to manage by default. Members of the team should request one of them own project work and become the Project Manager, granted this takes leading by influence and can be seen as insubordination. Managers can more easily Sponsor the project, even if somewhat informally. They can help the Project Manager progress the work on that front. They can even still report back to the Executive Suite concerning the project, if that's how the company chooses to operate. I have been both an Operational Manager and a Project Manager for several years in each capacity. I have found that Operational Management is great for perpetuating tried and true practices and consistency, while Project Management is best for innovations, creating better processes and best practices, and scaling up your efforts. But one employee shouldn't be expected to manage both at the same time, because you'll get burnt out; it's like having 2 full-time jobs. (Anyone else experience that?) Follow me for more tips on how to integrate better project management, especially in functional environments that are not quite sure where it fits in your organization and its practices. Let's make our work more fluid and advance our careers and companies in more practical ways, even if it questions (debunks) the status quo. #businessprogress #projectmanagement #professionalgrowth

Friday Thoughts 🎓 : Project Manager vs People Manager As a project manager, your primary focus is on the successful planning, execution, monitoring, and completion of specific projects. On the other hand, people managers are responsible for overseeing the performance, development, and well-being of individuals or teams within an organization. It's important to note that project managers can also develop their skills in people management. By doing so, they can significantly improve their project execution and delivery. Don't limit yourself to just one area of expertise. Expand your horizons and become a well-rounded professional who can excel in both project management and people management. #upskilling #empathy #peoplemanagement #projectmanagement

Author | Mentor | Passionate Project Management Professional who helps project managers to achieve their career goals without stress.
As a project manager, have you ever wondered about the career growth opportunities that this field can offer? In my early years of project management, I used to think that the career path was limited and that I could not go beyond program or portfolio management. However, things have changed, and project management has become a career path with tremendous growth potential. Unlike in the past, where project management was seen as a separate field from general management, today, it is becoming increasingly close to the core of the business. This means that project management professionals now have the chance to excel in their careers and reach top-level roles within organizations. To succeed in this field, project managers need to develop certain skills and qualities. One of the most important things is to understand the industry in which the organization operates. This requires a deeper understanding of how the industry is evolving, the threats and opportunities, regulatory framework, competitors, their market positioning and strategies, and organizational strengths and weaknesses, among other things. This level of understanding will serve a PM well even if they change industries later. Another important skill is to develop well-rounded leadership skills beyond building a team and having members work well together. It involves ensuring a healthy work/life balance, treating people as individuals rather than just resources, supporting team members' career ambitions, etc. Project managers also need to develop strong, capability-based relationships with business stakeholders by meeting them where their priorities lie - the business drivers and outcomes that matter to them. Being able to discuss a project in business terms, and against the background of the business reasons for doing the work, will demonstrate an understanding of their world, not just the project world. Additionally, contributing to the improvement of project management within the organization is essential. This means identifying ways that those areas can be improved, thinking through potential problems with changes, and proposing well-thought-out suggestions for improvement, instead of just executing standard approaches and following approved processes. Following these steps may not have an immediate practical impact, but it can help develop a solid reputation. People will start to view the project manager as someone who understands more about the business than most PMs, an individual who is respected by business stakeholders and supported by team members. I will not be surprised to see many C-level executives from Project Management in the coming years. What do you think? #projectleadership #projectmanagement #projectmanagementprofessionals #projectmanagementwithsoumen #soumenray #relaxprojectmanagers

Key role of project manager (and by extension project executive sponsor) is to reduce unnecessary #complexity. Some thoughts. 1. Through minimalist stakeholder management involving only the most appropriate ones in key workflows or communications; and creating channels so that the wider organisation can be looped in if required or for on-boarding new stakeholders. 2. Avoid creating mirror organisations within project and as much as possible embed the non-unique activities of the project (finance, HR, procurement, etc..) to use the organisation’s business operations as platform. Ideally the project should focus its cognitive capacity on unique activities or on those that directly contribute to project objectives. 3. Optimize workflows for learning and experimentation for the part of the project scope that have great uncertainty and risk while alternatively optimising these for quality and adherence to plan for those scope that is more routine or known. https://lnkd.in/gzUdXEgr?
