The year ahead will be pivotal for businesses' diversity efforts, as attacks against #dei — diversity, equity and inclusion — will likely intensify. There’s progress being made, but also warning signs. IN THE ARTS.... (1) League of American Orchestras recently shared their new Catalyst Guide, with learnings from 15 orchestras that are making progress towards engaging younger and more racially diverse audiences. The Guide explores 8 key audience diversification strategies, ways to overcome commonly experienced challenges, and case studies showing orchestras in action. Download the report: https://lnkd.in/e283_jDx (2) In the efforts to dismantle systematic oppression, Harriet Tubman effect, an institute for justice advocacy and research, presented “the Lantern Library Pop-Up & Storytelling Festival: Event to Dismantle Systematic Oppression” in December 2023 at Lincoln Center Theater. In attendance were employees from LCT, City Center, MCC, New York Theater Workshop, The Public Theater, and many others. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eYwFW2-H (3) Advisory Board for the Arts regularly surveys leaders at cultural organizations. A survey fielded Nov 28-Dec 6, 2023 shows that diversity of artists and creative teams is significantly more important than it was 5 years ago. 68% said "diversity and representation of artists on stage" was now "very important." 59% said "diversity and representation across artistic direction and/or creative team (e.g., playwrights, composers, directors, etc.)" was now "very important." And 43% said "diversity and representation of stories told/themes" was "very important." https://lnkd.in/eNBbbnmf MEANWHILE... Corporate America is backing away from DEI. Conservative politicians and pundits have made DEI a target, with new laws limiting its practice cropping up in Florida and Texas. DEI funding and staffing flailed last year, after a two-year boom in the wake of the protests that followed the murder of George Floyd in 2020. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court's decision last year overturning the use of affirmative action in universities has drawn attention to corporate diversity efforts. At the same time, many business leaders say they're still committed. In a survey of chief HR officers, zero respondents said they were planning on scaling back DEI in 2024. [But] businesses are pulling back from the term "DEI" and moving towards efforts around "well-being and inclusion." Read more: https://lnkd.in/gNkSCS8w

LEADERS, are you aware of how you handle disagreements, confrontations and conflicting stories? Have you done the work on your biases? Do you have expectations around fairness and equity. Take a look at the latest low-level behavior coming from our House of Representatives. More than that, ask yourself why MTG is being allowed to behave this way. Would any of our women of color be allowed to do the things that she has done over the last 4 years? Furthermore, why are the men not stepping up to stop this? https://lnkd.in/gzpUsizT

Also it is the way you carry a load that determines what and how much load you carry or not carry. How and what are inseparable because they are rooted in who and what you think you are relative to the world in which you live. The process of living is the process of "reinforcement of identity". This is why authenticity is so critical. This is why authentic self-knowledge is so important. If you don't know your authentic self, that is, if you misidentify yourself, then you will be bound to continue reinforcing your false identity. Then, you continue to carry loads (what) which you should not carry in ways and amounts (how and how much) that are improper for you.
In times of challenges, how we see the world and how we choose to position ourselves matter. Here is an example to inspire your reflections as a leader: “Lena Horne was a singer, actress and Civil Rights Activist who first established herself as an accomplished live singer and then transitioned into film work. She signed with MGM studios and became known as one of the top African American performers of her time, seen in such films as Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather. She was also known for her work with civil rights groups and refused to play roles that stereotyped African American women, a stance that many found controversial. After some time out of the limelight during the '70s, she made a revered, award-winning comeback with her 1981 show Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music.” https://lnkd.in/gHmPDUvE Here is a video with Lena Horne in her own words: https://lnkd.in/eJvjy8PB #leadership #innovation #practice #purpose
