𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿 to family real estate companies and 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 to senior leaders and executives
Oh no! My passionate San Francisco cheerleading is hitting a big bump. Macy's has announced that they will be closing their iconic Union Square store in the next two years. I saw the headline and immediately cringed in anticipation of the onslaught of snide remarks from the San Francisco cynics and naysayers. I will confess that I did have a moment of "what the heck?". Yet if we read the entire article and other similar articles the story is clearly not so much about the woes of downtown San Francisco, thought that is a part of the story. It is primarily another chapter in the story of the evolution of retail in America. I use that term "evolution" literally. It is perfect evidence of our friend Charles Darwin, survivial of the fittest. Macy's has struggled for decades to find their legs as a mass retailer. At one point they were going upscale, then focus on designers, then a push to middle America as the surviving national department store and more recently expansion into off price. The bottom line is that they have never figured out how to truly adapt and move beyond the 20th century (maybe even 19th century) department store legacy. If there have been recent questions, these announcement prove it, Macy's is essentially going out of business. They will continue to cut costs, save investment, tweak and try new ideas, but the future value is primarily in their real estate and to a minor amount tied to their brand. So, yes it is another bruise to downtown San Francisco, but we are in no way on the ropes, or even stunned. Who is going to bet against the ability of the San Francisco market to adapt? Really, the modern day captital of innovation and resilience? Lots of work ahead for sure, but Macy's departure is another opportunity for The City by the Bay to come back even stronger. Recently, I went to Home Depot looking for parts for a pressure washer and a hose adapter. I had to speak with nearly five associates, none of whom could help me find what I needed. Four of them seemed unsure and mentioned that the store didn't have a lot of stock. One associate understood my request but made it more complicated, ultimately telling me it wouldn't work. I was ready to give up and leave when I finally found the part I needed, and it worked perfectly. I believe companies should invest in their employees by training them thoroughly in their specialties. Instead of just hiring staff to stock shelves, give them opportunities to become knowledgeable experts. For instance, if you run a shoe store, all your employees should know about the shoes you sell. #homedepot #2cents

When I started as CEO of Best Buy, I spent my first week on the job working in one of our stores in Minnesota to learn from our frontliners what we needed to change to be successful. As a new CEO, I learned so much from our frontliners in that store. My job was easy: show up, ask questions, make good notes, and do as I was told! This also sent the clear signal that we were going to focus on better serving our customers — and that we would do it through the intelligence of our employees. How are you staying connected to the frontliners in your organization? #UnleashingHumanMagic

Mr SHOREDITCH UPDATE 📍 The office market is continuing to show a solid level of traction, most of which is coming into the 2-5k sq ft bracket. Demand focused on prime, fully-fitted space with a lot of requirements looking for character warehouse space. The retail market is much stronger for prime with Redchurch Street becoming sought-after again. There’s a number of very exciting global fashion brands wanting footprint in the area but a lack of prime stock. Secondary retail is still challenging though there’s not a huge amount of supply. The F&B market is continuing to go from strength to strength with the Shoreditch food scene becoming one of the best in London. There’s a couple of very exciting deals that we’re working on which will increase this further. As always we’re on the ground dealing with a lot of interesting on and off market deals and requirements so reach out to discuss yours.

Every now and then, we all need someone to bet on our potential... Luckily, I was given that chance back in 2010. I was doing my first role out of college as a field sales representative covering 6 Home Depot stores in Orlando, FL. Not the most glamorous stocking shelves, putting up literature, and selling in the aisles.... but it taught you about the brands, how Home Depot operates, and the end user which was crucial. I was proactive and befriended a local high-flyer in the company, Mike Heist, and built some rapport. When an opportunity for a promotion came up, I wasn't at the top of the list. But since I was bold networking within the company I got a shot. I had a 2 hour heads up and drove straight there with little time to prep. Ended up interviewing with Mike and another sales leader, Daniel Jonke (pictured above). Was definitely nervous, fumbled at times, but did a good enough job to get the offer. I feel pretty confident I wouldn't be where I'm at now if I wouldn't have gotten that first promotion at Milwaukee Tool/TTi. Appreciate Mike, Daniel, and the entire regional team that ended up hiring me to come on board. Came full circle recently when I reconnected with Daniel at an event 14 years later. The lesson here is you always will need someone to throw you a bone to really break out in your career, you need to be proactive with networking, and do hard things on purpose so your prepared when you get a shot! 💪🏼💪🏼 #mindset #sales #habits
