The transformation of our food systems is essential to tackle climate change and nature loss, while also unlocking socioeconomic opportunities for local communities. As we celebrate #WorldFoodDay, we're excited to spotlight an innovative and nature-based solution for food security and sustainability: #halophytes! These remarkable edible plants grow naturally in the UAE and thrive in saline environments – reducing pressure on precious freshwater resources. They contribute to climate resilience as strong carbon sinks, and offer significant nutritional benefits. We look forward to planting the seeds for a better future together! 🌍🦩 Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day with us! 🕊️🌍 Twice a year, during the main migration period for birds, we raise awareness for the incredible journeys of migratory birds and the vital importance of protecting their habitats. The UAE is located along key migratory routes and witnesses millions of birds passing through its skies. Of the 460+ bird species recorded here, nearly 400 are migratory. Each year, these birds rely on coastal mudflats, lagoons, oases and traditional farms like those in Al Bithnah, to rest and replenish their body fat reserves. During our field surveys in Al Bithnah, we have recorded several migratory birds like European Bee Eaters, the Striated Flycatcher and the Blue Rock-thrush making stopovers to survive long journeys. Through our work, Emirates Nature-WWF plays an important role in protecting insects, habitats and feeding grounds for migratory birds in both coastal and inland habitats. By restoring native trees and supporting sustainable #agroecology farming, we ensure migratory birds are provided with the habitat, food, and shelter they need to thrive for generations to come. In turn, these birds play a key role in pollination and seed dispersal, supporting our natural ecosystems. #WorldMigratoryBirdDay

At the Arab Water Forum, Maha Al-Salehi, Manager of Nature Conservation and Economy at Emirates Nature-WWF, highlighted one of the lesser-discussed benefits of cultivating salt-loving halophytes. Beyond the potential benefits they offer for food security and local economic growth, these plants thrive in high-saline environments, thus reducing pressure on precious freshwater resources. Learn more below.
I was glad to participate in the 6th Arab Water Forum yesterday in Abu Dhabi, speaking in the "Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for Water Resilience" session about Halophytes as NbS. In my talk, I shared insights from Emirates Nature-WWF's project, "NbS for Climate, Biodiversity & People," highlighting how saline agriculture and NbS can provide sustainable agricultural alternatives for countries like the UAE. By utilizing saline water for crops like Salicornia and Arthrocaulon, we can reduce pressure on freshwater, support food security, and create economic opportunities: https://lnkd.in/dvJx8SJV It was a pleasure to share the stage with incredible experts like Khalil Ammar (International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA)), Khaled AbuZeid (CEDARE), and Abdoul Aziz Niane (ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas). #NbS #Halophytes #WaterResilience #SalineAgriculture #FoodSecurity #ClimateAction #Biodiversity

ADIB - Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank and Emirates Nature-WWF have joined forces to support the restoration of native trees in the UAE. Through the ADIB mobile application, you can now donate directly to environmental cause such as planting native trees across the UAE and the restoration of barren areas. Native trees play a crucial role in restoring ecosystems – by providing shelter for wildlife, improving soil health, acting as carbon sinks to enhance climate resilience, and promoting ecological balance. This collaboration aims to encourage the bank’s customers and the broader public to take part in these initiatives, supporting the UAE’s sustainability agenda and facilitating conservation and preservation of nature. #TogetherPossible

We're delighted to see our parent-friendly work policies featured in Khaleej Times. Since the inception of Emirates Nature-WWF in 2001, the well-being of our colleagues has been at the heart of the organization. We foster a positive working environment that is flexible and empathetic to parents, with comprehensive leave policies, a hybrid work model, a flexi-summer policy and more. This gives us the opportunity to live with purpose, and also put our kids and families first. Our commitment to a healthy working culture has been recognized by the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority, which honoured Emirates Nature-WWF with the esteemed Parent-Friendly + Label for two years in a row.
