Pulteney Distillery. 🥃 Based in the remote harbour town of Wick, Pulteney distillery was once Scotland’s most northerly mainland distillery and was only accessible by sea. It produces distinctive coastal-inspired maritime malts – one, even appearing recently in Netflix’s global hit, Squid Game. Region: Highland Founded: 1826 by James Henderson Current owner: International Beverage Range ⩥ The core range includes a 12-Year-Old, a 15-Year-Old an 18-Year-Old, a 25-Year-Old, and non-age statement malts Huddart and Harbour. The Coastal Series features malt whiskies finished in port and wine casks. Water 💧 Pulteney’s water is sourced from Loch Hempriggs and carried via a 5.5 mile lade into the distillery. It was designed and constructed by famed Scottish civil engineer THOMAS TELFORD. Stills 🏭 Pulteney distillery’s stills are rather uniquely shaped, featuring unusually large BOILING BALLS and a flat top, a shape which has inspired the design of the brand’s whisky bottles. Worm Tub 🪱 Pulteney distillery is one of only 20 Scotch whisky producers to use an old-fashioned WORM TUB CONDENSER. This type of condenser helps to produce Old Pulteney’s signature robustly, heavy spirit. Prohibition 🚫 Contrary to popular belief, PROHIBITION wasn’t just limited to American shores. In 1922, under the terms of the Temperance (Scotland) Act of 1913, the town of Wick became ‘dry’. Every pub in town was boarded up, and Pulteney distillery was closed for business, only reopening once Prohibition was repealed in 1947. Fun Fact: A bottle of Old Pulteney 18-Year-Old made a sneaky appearance in season 2, episode 4 of Netflix’s global hit Squid Game, when it was enjoyed by the Masked Officer as he studied the surveillance screens. 🦑 Have you ever tried an Old Pulteney? I was fortunate to be gifted a bottle of the 12yr old. We broke it open this christmas just past, and what a great dram it is!

2wMy great grandfather was born in Pulteney Town and lived on Vansittart Street, so I've always had a sentimental attachment to Old Pulteney. It's a great dram as well!
