Did you know that schools' efforts to engage parents and guardians in their children's learning have a positive impact of about 4 months of additional student progress over the course of a year? This is a key finding from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). The EEF recommends that schools might consider: ✔ tailoring communications to encourage positive dialogue about learning ✔ regularly reviewing how well the school is working with parents, ✔ identifying areas for improvement ✔ offering more sustained and intensive support where needed. Certainly these are all things we are currently aiming to do at St. John's International School, through our weekly newsletter; the Seesaw platform in our EYS and PS; information sessions and coffees; reporting periods; PS and MHS parent focus groups; emails via isams; and Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences - just to name a few. Additionally, our team is evaluating our current reporting provision and considering how to best communicate students' academic progress in a manner that is frequent, clear, digestible and not onerous for our teachers. Our principals have shared a survey to gauge how our community prefers to be communicated with when it comes to academic development. We are always looking for feedback in order to hone and improve our systems. #academicprogress #learning #studentprogress #teaching #assessmentforlearning #schools Image by johnhain on Pixabay

❤🧠 How do we put students’ own #emotionallearning under their control? That’s been the question on my mind this month – partly kicked off Mohamed Ibrahim’s take on evidence-based school pastoral work in Tes. (https://lnkd.in/eBugZAwB) It's a great, though-provoking article for school staff – but what resources are out there for learners themselves? We’ve made such strides in teaching young people to approach academics metacognitively, so how are we going to do the same for social and emotional learning? Well, fate provided on my lunchbreak today and now I’m enjoying a brew and some Burton. There’s a lot of COVID in the book - which learners are probably all too ready to forget by now - but the rest of the advice is timeless. (And whether we want to talk about it or not, anyone in the education industry can tell you that the pandemic's impact of student wellbeing hasn't gone anywhere…) 💬 What other resources are #SEL must-reads/must-sees/must-hears for young people in school and college? And for what topics are learners still just waiting for that truly accessible introduction?
