One important step for Volvo and for our customers who wants to pave the road for a more safe and sustainable future.
Breakthrough: Volvo Trucks will launch a long-range version of the Volvo FH Electric with 600 km range. The enabler for the 600 km range is a new driveline technology, the so-called e-axle, which creates space for significantly more battery capacity onboard. More efficient batteries, a further improved battery management system and overall efficiency of the powertrain also contribute to the extended range. “Our new electric flagship will be a great complement to our wide range of electric trucks and enable zero-exhaust emission transport also for the longer distances. It will be a great solution for transport companies with a high annual mileage on their trucks and with a strong commitment to reduce CO2,” says Roger Alm, President Volvo Trucks.

✈️🔬👩🔬 CustomCells is gearing up to showcase its expertise in the HELENA Project! HELENA is set to propel Europe towards a climate-neutral future, especially as electric aviation prepares for takeoff within the next five to 10 years. With innovations already underway for electric vehicle batteries, HELENA will also reduce Europe's dependence on Asian battery production. Developed by a consortium with deep-rooted European expertise covering the entire battery value chain, HELENA represents a significant step forward. 🔋 About the Technology HELENA, which stands for Halide solid-state batteries for ELectric vEhicles aNd Aircraft, addresses the critical need for safe, high-efficiency, and high-power-density solid-state battery cells. These batteries, part of the 4b generation, utilize a high-capacity Ni-rich cathode (NMC), high-energy Li metal (LiM) anode, and Li-ion superionic halide solid electrolyte, making them ideal for electric vehicles and aircraft. 👩🔬 CustomCells Role CustomCells is at the forefront of scaling up the technology developed by the consortium to an industry-relevant cell size. Our focus lies in developing cell assembly techniques for larger cells, a crucial step in realizing the potential of HELENA. We're currently in discussions with partners to define the parameters and specifications for the necessary equipment, particularly for cell assembly under dry conditions, where processing the halide electrolyte at extremely low humidity presents a unique challenge. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to drive innovation and sustainability in the battery technology landscape! ⚡ #CustomCells #HELENA #Research #BatteryInnovation #Sustainability #Aviation #eAviation #ZeroEmission #BatteryCells #Sustainability #EnergyAtItsBest #EnergyAsAGiven 🌱✈️

⏳ Any #Innovation requires great timing! I did my PhD about variable compression technologies for internal combustions engines. This field which has already been existing since the invention of engines. The oldest patents, I could find about my preferred solution approach dated back to 1887. I optimised this basic concepts with #AI-algorithms to find the best possible variants, that I finally implemented and tested on lastest gasoline engines from 2007 onwards. For decades the focus of development of the car #industry was to generate more torque and power in engines. This pushed development of injection technologies, turbo-charging and variable valve systems. When I started in 2007 the interest in reaching higher efficiency while keeping torque and power of an engine constant was small, but growing and it had mainly been driven by world-wide CO2-regulation. 🇪🇺 🇨🇳 🇺🇸 With the rising pressure of regulations, there suddenly was an option to invest a few hundred euros per engine to get a reduction in CO2-emissions. As the world market had been dominated by gasoline engines, the scale of a 10-20 g CO2 reduction per kilometre would have been massive for Volkswagen Group – the biggest car manufacturer at that time. So the innovation window 🪟had been open around 2012, for the first time, 125 years after invention of variable compression systems. But with this window of opportunity smashed when in 2015 the Diesel crisis enfolded and at the same time it became clear, electric mobility would develop faster than previously expected – benefitting from a zero emission count in the fleet emissions. So finally the technology and its development ended quite instantly and me and my around 130 colleagues who worked on this topic full-time had to reorient themselves. Many dozens of million euros had already been spent, but the opportunity window was closed. This window had been open for just around 3 years -beforehand there was no appreciation for cutting down emissions with such an elaborate and expensive technology and after that there was a superior technology, that got supported of most of the regulation authorities: e-mobility. For me it had been the sign to move on in 2016 – being an environmental engineer it is my goal to leverage technology for enabling sustainability. I then worked on new business models in sustainable mobility and finally founded Footprint Technologies to cut down returns in shoe e-commerce. My core mission of leveraging technology for more sustainability is the same - just the product is quite different. 😉 ✍️ Do you also have great expamples of innovations, that missed their window of opportunity?
