My first conference was an eye-opening experience. I grew up in a small town; a conference at a big hotel in a huge city with a ton of people was a lot. I was excited, but overwhelmed. Once the conference began I started to relax and discover key takeaways: My problems weren't unique Nearly everyone I talked with shared common issues: low budget, not enough support, too much to do and not enough time. The specifics varied, but in the end it all came back to common themes. I loved hearing their ideas about how they found ways to deal with these issues. Talks were only the tip of the iceberg Presentations at the conference were insightful but the real value was in roundtables, workshops, and especially conversations that happened between all these events. It was a sea of knowledge and experience far beyond what I normally had access to. Conference value had a shelf life The ideas from the conference would only stick if they were applied. If I didn't proactively integrate it into my work then the daily grind would quickly wash it all away. Pace myself Conferences are jam packed with interesting tracks full of interesting topics, but I couldn't do it all. I'm an introvert, so as Simon Sinek puts it I only have a certain amount of "coins" I can spend on interactions each day. I had to invest them wisely. My ultimate realization was that connection and validation from those in the same boat were infinitely more valuable than any specific piece of information.

The future of events is here, and it's looking fantastic! 💡Expert Insights: Learning from the best in the business was a true privilege. It’s amazing how a few expert pointers can completely shift your perspective and approach. 🎤Engaging Panels: The panel discussions were a standout. Is anyone else feeling a bit jaded with conferences at the moment? I've been to a few where it feels like attendees are the product not the customer, and speakers are there to promote sales rather than ideas. Am I being miserable or are others feeling this way? It's just feeling a bit same old, same old at the moment. What's been your best and worst conference experiences? And what would your dream conference include? Mine would be challenging speakers with great stories and ideas, great venues, space for downtime, purpose led and innovative ideas and making it easy to meet new people and interact. And covering the basics of course - like being able to access wifi and food/drinks! Am I alone here? What do others think?
