Every spring, roughly one in three birds, two billion, migrate through Texas. The sparkling skyline at night has posed a hazard to these birds, as artificial light confuses, traps, and disorients them. 🐦 💡 One of the mass collisions occurred at a 23-floor skyscraper called One Moody Plaza in Galveston. A combination of corner spotlights pointing directly in the sky and an LED green glowing halo around the top of the tower, were to blame. American National occupies this building and they teamed up with Houston Audubon to develop a science-based response. Together, they host workshops in Galveston to educate the community on migratory bird patterns. American National now follows a policy that involves turning off their exterior spotlights and internal lights at night during key migratory periods, spring and fall. Now, Texas has implemented a statewide campaign, "Lights Out, Texas!" to encourage building owners, developers, and businesses to switch off non-essential lighting from 11 pm to 6 am each night during spring and autumn migration. #Texas #birds #conservation #LightsOutTexas #wildlife #environment

I will be presenting my first Nature Detectives workshop at the Folsom Cordova Community Partnership Community Center Wednesday morning July 17 from 9-945. I will be sharing and asking questions about different types of natural objects found along the American River Parkway: bark, a woidpecker granary, branches, pinecones, oak galls and a branch carved by bees. “Did something chew on this pinecone?” “What is this object and why does it look like this?” “What is important about this pinecone to preserving the animal habitat of the river?” These questions engage curiosity, develop key problem solving and critical thinking skills. Spring is nearly upon us. Time for the bloom of wildflowers and the hum of pollinators. Now is the time to ensure that #pollinators emerge into a world that supports them, not poison them. 🌻 Colorado is rich in opportunity, thanks in part to its diverse landscapes. Vast agricultural areas give way to the Rocky Mountains, where natural environments and recreation take precedence. Municipal managers need the freedom to navigate these landscapes, which often have diverse and sometimes competing requirements. Policies effective in agricultural regions may not always suit mountainous areas, and vice versa. 📣 This is a significant reason why we, at WILD, are supporting HB1178. Colorado is not a one-size-fits-all state, and neither are its citizens. To achieve policy balance that safeguards both our farms and wild areas, city managers must have the flexibility to adapt.
