Here's a neat little case study illustrating why resort fees are the Ozempic of hospitality pricing strategy. MADE hotel in NYC charges a $30 daily "curation fee" (as of now, I just checked). Beyond using a different name for the always-infuriating resort fee, it shows exactly why these fees have persisted for so long and will likely do so even if and when regulations change. On the positive side, the curated features offered for $30/night are not bad as far as resort fees go: coffee shop coffee/tea, wine, wifi, fitness club access, etc, and it is less than 10% of the room rate for most bookings. If someone used all these features daily, they would easily be worth more than 30 bucks. For the hotel, these features have very low incremental costs. On the negative side, though, it has all the infuriating characteristics of a resort fee: mandatoriness, bundled features of mixed or even zero individual value, sneakiness, and drip presentation during booking. It's not quite a junk fee, as the hotel industry rep quoted in the article says. It's more of a nuisance fee or aggravation fee, not likely to dissuade the hotel's target customers enough from making a booking and consistently bring in a nice chunk of high-margin dollars to the hotel. #pricing #hospitality https://lnkd.in/gPZHMU38

The connecting rooms How many connecting rooms a hotel or resort has depends on the market. A destination which attracts a lot of families will tend to have more connecting rooms vs. a business traveler focused property in a business district location. And the hotels with more connecting rooms are probably built in the 80’s/early 90’s when that was a fad, just like jacuzzi tubs in rooms. Newer properties don’t build them that way unless they are building rooms that can be sold as 1 bedroom or then combined for 2 bedrooms family units, normally a king sized bedroom connected to a 2 single beds room. And remember to use the right terms when requesting for one because most guests use the term incorrectly. I have this conversation at least once a week with our reservation guests. "Adjoining" rooms are next to each other. "Connecting" rooms have the door that connects the rooms. Trust me.... Google "Connecting vs Adjoining" 😅
