Two highlights of my career so far are winning Management Today's 35 Women Under 35 Awards, in 2021 and 2023. These Awards have sought to recognise, reward and celebrate the achievements of women who are reshaping the business landscape, particularly in the early stages of their careers. Here I can be seen last year surrounded by totally incredible females in the winners' photoshoot. Now, I am thrilled to be a Judge (very much still under 35 😂!!) for the Awards. MT has today published an article on what what it takes to maximise your chances of winning. Amongst other questions, I was asked 'what aspect of a candidate's entry resonates with you most, and why?': “The 'je ne sais quoi' for me can be most closely described as seeing a true, fiery curiosity. A curiosity that catalyses a determination to challenge systemic inequalities related to gender across industries.” The final deadline for entries to the Awards is fast approaching (14 March). There’s a long-lasting, pervasive stereotype that advertising is a male-dominated, old boys’ club industry.   And it’s wrong.    At lmno, our current team is 64% women and 36% men. The Association of National Advertisers says that 67.5% of their members are women. And when I think of the individual women I know who are represented by those numbers, I see people who are role models.   I think of decisive, highly visible women in leadership roles.   I think of knowledgeable, indispensable women in support roles.   Eager, enthusiastic women who are just setting out in their careers and innovative, determined women who are starting over with something new.   I think of the creative, strategic, intelligent, kind women I’ve known as colleagues and clients.   And I count myself lucky to work with them and learn from them.   I can’t solve the problems that women still face in the world with an inspirational LinkedIn post. Women in business talk a lot about lifting each other up, but.... With Women's History Month starting tomorrow, I feel compelled to elaborate on how I feel you really and truly and genuinely and impactfully support women in business (and life). This is what it sounds like: - Who specifically can I introduce you to? What is their name (specific person) or title? - Let me know if you can join me at this networking event or on this sales call. - Why don't you sit in with me on this meeting? - Why don't you come with me to this event? So and so will be there, and I know you have been wanting to meet them. - I gave this person your contact info and they are expecting your call, I really talked you up and they are excited to meet you. - When can you meet for coffee so we can get to know each other and our business needs better and strategize together? I am so lucky that not only have I said/ done all of those things, but they have all been offered to me. And, this is what it LOOKS like. 🚨𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬: 50/50 Women on Boards published their Q1’24 report, signaling an alarm on the backwards rate of progress in reaching gender parity on boards. 𝐀𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞, **2045** 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫—𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 2 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲! 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰? ➸Companies with less diverse boards are more likely to exit the Russell 3000 list due to factors such as sales, mergers, or bankruptcy. ➸Research by the London Business School confirms companies with more women on their boards have higher returns on equity, higher valuations, lower likelihood of shareholder dissent, and stronger boardroom relationships and collaboration. 𝐘𝐞𝐭… 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐧 𝐔𝐒 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝. According to the report: ➸For the period ending March 31, 2024, 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 30.7% of the 587 new board positions were filled by women, the lowest since 2017. ➸Women hold only 29.7% of board seats in Russell 3000 companies. ➸Only 12% of the Russell 3000 has gender-balanced boards, totaling 354 companies, up by just one from Q4 2023. ➸Women and men of color together hold 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 19.4% of board seats. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐨? ▷Highlight and share your expertise. ▷Request employer-funded programs for board readiness. In celebration of Women's History Month, Captivate delves into the evolving role of women in business, highlighting the prevalence of impostor syndrome while also showcasing empowering statistics. A Captivate Office Pulse study revealed that 40% of women report never experiencing self-doubt, surpassing men at 31%. When asked if they felt their success was deserved, 46% of women said that not only did they earn their spot, but they’re also aspiring to even higher echelons. A big CONGRATULATIONS to all the winners from the recent Smart Women Awards! As a male in this female dominated Industry I wanted to write a post to my fellow "fellas" on why it's so important that we support and endorse this. Last week, the industry celebrated at an inspiring event that honored the trailblazing women who’ve shaped our industry. It was an evening of recognition and reflection on the incredible progress and accomplishments women have made in events industry. But even in a field where women are the majority, the role of male allies remains vital. Allyship isn’t just about filling gaps; it’s about reinforcing the foundation of respect, equality, and support that drives our industry forward. Men can be allies by: ⚫ Mentoring women. ⚫ Advocating for their ideas. ⚫ Challenging biases when they see them. Small actions, like ensuring women have a seat at the table and a voice in the discussion, can make a big difference. For event professionals, promoting a culture of allyship leads to more innovative and inclusive events. When every team member feels supported, the creativity and success of the event are bound to follow. So, gentleman, let me ask you; What steps are you taking to be an ally in our industry?
