If you watch just one thing today, make it this... 💗 🏥 Every week in the UK & Ireland 70 people suffer an aortic dissection. Sadly, half die. An aortic dissection occurs when there is a partial tear in the aortic wall. It is a time critical medical emergency that (when diagnosed and treated on time) has a better than 80% survival rate. Sadly 33% of those suffering from an aortic dissection are misdiagnosed, including my mum. An aortic dissection can happen at any age, and without any apparent warning. 2000 lives are lost in the UK every year, and it's estimated that 10 people die a week due to misdiagnosis. Where is the “best” place to donate items? If you’re wanting to feel even better about those bags of donations you’re hauling away after a good decluttering session, here is a list of donation centers where you can be absolutely certain that your items are needed and will be used and appreciated. *These are suggestions for Austin, TX specifically, but some organizations are national. - Old towels/sheets/blankets: Animal shelters - All clothing and shoes: churches and homeless shelters, women’s shelters - Strollers and baby items: Salvation Army (Goodwill will not take these due to recall concerns) - Books: - Small amount: little free libraries in your neighborhood - Large amount: Inside Books Project (sends books to prisons in Texas) - Health/medical equipment: AGE of Austin (senior care) - Furniture, building materials, appliances: Habitat for Humanity - Household and kitchen items: Caritas of Austin (working to end homelessness) - Professional clothing, handbags, jewelry: Dress for Success (career coaching and interview prep) - Musical instruments, gear and supplies: Anthropos Arts (connects low-income youth with professional musicians) Large items like furniture and appliances can often be picked up for you when you schedule it with the organization! It’s also a good idea to double check that these organizations are taking the types of items you want to donate and to know where to drop them off. This week's appointments were definitely on a different level and tested our limits! We had 17 appointments, spread across 3 vets, 7 more than planned for the regular week-bringing our count to 113 for 2024! Let's look at some statistics from the week! -8 females, 9 males -3 pregnancies -2 pyometra -1 abscess, with infected foot -1 tail amputation -1 leg mass -1 in heat One thing we get asked a lot is how much we spend on appointments, and there are some folks that still assume that we can get surgeries for free. Though we understand that you may not be able to pay for your colony to get fixed, it does not mean that we want to turn you away. To be honest, if we don't help you when you are requesting it at 10 cats, personally, we don't want to wait until the colony starts multiplying! Dear Supporter, The Noor Memorial Trust Hospital is aimed at providing comprehensive medical care to underserved populations in Pakistan. Set to open in the Summer of 2024, our 65,000 sq ft facility will feature 65 beds across seven floors, serving an estimated 404,000 beneficiaries in the surrounding regions. Our Challenge: Our current clinic and pharmacy are overwhelmed and unable to manage severe medical conditions, forcing many to seek expensive treatments elsewhere, which they simply cannot afford. The number of CVD deaths per year in the United States declined from 1980 to 2010 but increased in recent years from 2011 to 2021. We lost a decade of progress in CVD death reduction over the last 10 years!
