A note from my latest Energy Voice interview “Fair play to Repsol for initially making the move to install our products and mitigate the ‘fail fix’ problem on both the Fulmar and the Auk platforms, however at this point we believe they are still operating with false compliance.” I make this note as the units they purchased from RD are still sitting in my yard, however all going well with the new Repsol leadership team in place we will soon be back out to finish the work we started in 2023. Notably I believe every operator both onshore and off has a level of false compliance due to the use of deluge nozzles guaranteed to fail a blockage test, sprinkler nozzles used in deluge systems and the fact that performance standards do not stipulate a 100% removal and inspection of deluge nozzles after a wet test is complete. https://lnkd.in/en7-UMKh This is not a new problem and if we look at the KP4 Initiative Link: https://lnkd.in/eBSimZ7e Link https://lnkd.in/eXB6pHjh you will see how the deluge part of this has failed miserably. What I believe the Health and Safety Executive should be doing is documenting these failures and introducing a new initiative to achieve the original goals and more. There is a decade of failings to review since KP4 and learn from, for this to be produced and implemented. If they were to introduce more offshore inspectors to help educate the industry on how to follow their own guidance notes Link: https://lnkd.in/eZzMp-Jq which are now due for review, the industry could finally mitigate the "Fail & Fix" process. (Fix on Fault KP4) A fail on first time activation should be seen as a fail and only after a change of products, processes and a guaranteed first time activation pass at any time should the compliance cert be given. As we see our energy security at risk we should be stepping up the protection of our energy infrastructures, this will also benefit the people who work in the energy sector and the environments that surround these assets. Our second joint safety tour performed with TOTAL energies rep, SAIPEM, One Subsea/Aker and EBSE construction yard! I am proud that we are taking the right steps towards our main goal which is a safe workplace for everyone. Effective controls protect workers from workplace hazards; help avoid injuries, illnesses, and incidents; minimize or eliminate safety and health risks; and help employers provide workers with safe and healthful working conditions. To effectively control and prevent hazards, employers should: Involve workers, who often have the best understanding of the conditions that create hazards and insights into how they can be controlled. Identify and evaluate options for controlling hazards, using a "hierarchy of controls." Use a hazard control plan to guide the selection and implementation of controls, and implement controls according to the plan. Develop plans with measures to protect workers during emergencies and nonroutine activities. Evaluate the effectiveness of existing controls to determine whether they continue to provide protection, or whether different controls may be more effective. Review new technologies for their potential to be more protective, more reliable, or less costly.

The transfer of personnel offshore has been something of a theme throughout my seagoing and shore based career to date. Pilot transfers, shore gangways, CTV transfers, vessel to vessel, and walk to work to name a couple! I've been privileged and proud to lead discussion at project, company and industry level around the standardisation and development of best practice on the subject. At the heart of this, each and every time, is the people. Those rigging, operating and transferring. The biggest changes (for the better!) have always come about as a result of engagement with workforce about the risks and controls. With walk to work gangways, only when we fully understand the end results and impacts on people, can we work to improve the standards, designs and operation of gangway systems. Once again I am pleased to be representing my industry colleagues in this dialogue and development, on behalf of North Star and the Marine Safety Forum, alongside IMCA (International Marine Contractors Association) and G+ Global Offshore Wind Health and Safety Organisation, leading this conversation further. In Safety, there are no boundaries - no competition, no client or contractor - there is just us, looking after people. It is not the challenges we face, the decisions we make, that define us as individuals or as a collective, it is our response, our resilience and our attitude to accept we can always be better, that truly make us. This bulletin from the UK HSE is a welcome one, as usual their finger is on the pulse of global safety issues in offshore wind. Can I trust you.... Recently, in an debate at a conferance, I heard someone mention how they wished that work permits and risk assessments could be less complicated, wishing that they simply could be trusted to do their job, without all the paperwork.  I thought about this – Would this be better and safer, can you trust yourself to do the right thing every time that we do a job? Here's the reality: 95% of the time, our brain is on autopilot, and in the oil and gas industry, focus is critical to preventing incidents or accidents all the time.  We must admit and realize that we can't remember everything and that we will overlook things sometimes – tough, but that's the way it is and we all know that - We have all done it! Let’s take a step back to 36 years ago, to the Piper Alpha platform in the North Sea, where a tragic accident took the lives of 167 workers.  Back then, the jobs relied more on assumptions and trust.  Work permits, risk assessments, procedures and checklists weren’t as stringent as they are now, and that was found to be a root cause of the disaster. So, we owe it to those 167 souls to keep learning and improving.  Following procedures, doing thorough risk assessments, and conducting toolbox talks aren’t just boxes to tick; they are life-saving measures.   Checklists and verifications are there for a reason – to ensure that we all go home safely at the end of the day. Imagine this: You’re at the airport, ready to board a helicopter for your offshore trip.  The pilot turns to you and says, “I haven’t done the checklist, but trust me, I’m the pilot, I know my job!”  Would you take that flight? That’s why trust in our industry is different – it’s about trusting each other to follow the safety protocols and step in and stop, when something feels wrong.
