Customer Question: I have two gas processing plants and one pipeline of 1.000 km length, and need to implement different strategies and technologies to detect and measure methane fugitive emissions, what do you advise?

The EPA introduced the new Emissions Guidelines, outlining procedures for states to formulate plans to restrict methane emissions from existing sources. Acknowledging the critical role of oil and natural gas operations as the most significant industrial source of methane pollution in the U.S., this initiative represents a pivotal step toward a cleaner and more sustainable future. Is this blowdown a super-emitter? OOOOb establishes 100kg/hr methane release rate as a "super emitter" - but nobody I know in operations uses those units. What does that mean in terms of pressure and flow? Here's a quick guide, but the bottom line is that if you want to stay under the super emitter threshold, you're going to have to do your blowdowns VERY SLOWLY. Or better yet, call ZEVAC. Reference GPSA Section 5 and/or API RP 521, or contact us if you want to dig deeper. One important thing to remember is that the emissions regulations apply to the methane within the natural gas, but most operations folks are dealing with flow rates of the entire natural gas stream, including the non-methane components.

Check out my colleague Glen Hay tomorrow as he joins the Methane Guiding Principles webinar "Engineering solutions for methane abatement". Glen is an expert on converting excess gas to valuable products, which allows operators to eliminate routine flaring, reduce methane and carbon dioxide emissions, and create a new revenue stream. "The final rule...sets limits on how much #naturalgas can be flared — or burned off — before companies are charged royalties on the waste." Great to see at least a little bit of teeth in regulations to limit emissions leaks! #methane is way more powerful than carbon dioxide when it comes to warming the atmosphere for the first twenty years after release. Leak detection systems are critical in keeping this in check - I was surprised at the resistance I saw to installing and paying for them even in the #renewablenaturalgas industry. #Quantify! #energytransition https://lnkd.in/guApQwHN

At Methane Guiding Principles, one of the commitments made by our member organizations is to report on the progress made and steps being taken to reduce methane emissions. Therefore, on an annual basis, each member reports on key methane metrics, outlining how they are working to fulfil each of the five individual Methane Guiding Principles: 1. Continually reduce methane emissions 2. Advance strong performance across the gas supply chain 3. Improve accuracy of methane emissions data 4. Advocate sound policy and regulations on methane emissions 5. Increase transparency Find out more about each member's work and explore their progress in reducing methane emissions by visiting the Member Report web page - https://bit.ly/3YCxNo4 📊 #methanemitigation #memberreports #annualreports
