Anaerobic digestion #AD and renewable natural gas #RNG are climbing the US climate policy agenda. They offer a rapid path to lowering methane emissions from agriculture, food waste, and landfills, all of which are major sources, and urgently need redressing along with the oil and gas sector in order to meet emissions goals. Energy Vision has found the EPA's new rules for oil and gas infrastructure could cut methane emissions 17.5% by 2030, while AD/RNG could cut another 13.6% if rapidly scaled. Together, these critical strategies can enable the US to meet and exceed the Global Methane Pledge target of cutting methane 30% by 2030. For more on what this could mean for US policy, see the new video and other documentation of Energy Vision’s September 20 Congressional briefing on leveraging AD/RNG to cut methane emissions, posted here [https://lnkd.in/gPJSXCmE]. It features Congressman Jim Costa (D-CA 21), Senior Advisor in the Office of the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, Dr. Ilissa Ocko, Generate Upcycle’s Suzanne Hunt, Kevin Abernathy of the Milk Producers Council, and Energy Vision’s Matt Tomich and Joanna Underwood. Ratcheting down #methane is the best lever we have to limit warming by mid-century. The primary focus of the briefing was on the potential of ramping up AD/RNG and steps Congress can take to help accelerate it. Energy Vision’s recent report “Meeting the Methane Challenge” [https://lnkd.in/gieMNZXS] is another resource for policymakers. It has detailed analysis of the feasibility, costs, timing, and impacts of building AD/RNG infrastructure. Michael S. A great success on the Hill as Energy Vision led a briefing informing leaders and future leaders about what Congress needs to know about major methane emission sources beyond oil and gas, and how to leverage them for clean energy/climate benefits and to meet our 2030 goals. The session featured: Congressman Jim Costa, representative for California's 21st congressional district, Dr. Ilissa Ocko, Senior Advisor, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, Matt Tomich, President, Energy Vision, Suzanne Hunt, VP for Policy, Generate UpCycle and Kevin Abernathy, General Manager, Milk Producers Council. Video coming soon. Keep tuned!

Energy Vision just released the first clear roadmap for how the U.S. can reach “30x30” — the international goal of cutting methane emissions at least 30% by 2030. This is our best shot at slowing global warming since methane is such a potent greenhouse gas. In our new report Meeting the Methane Challenge, we found that if EPA’s new oil and gas production rules are fully complied with, that would take 17.5% off U.S. methane emissions. But where will the rest come from? We calculated that building about 4,700 anaerobic digesters to process food waste and manure would cut U.S. methane 13.6%. Together the two strategies can get us to 30x30 and beyond! https://lnkd.in/eAH2PwKe

As a founding organization of the Clean Fuels NY Coalition we at Energy Vision believe that clean air is a fundamental right for all. Sadly, the reality is that air pollution disproportionately harms communities of color. In her op-ed for Amsterdam News, Bertha Lewis, the President and Founder of The Black Institute, eloquently lays out the issue of vehicular pollution and air quality in New York City as it relates to environmental justice. Worth a read! https://lnkd.in/ecATrp9j
