If a newly proposed federal bill passes, companies that make, use, package, or transport plastic pellets will be in violation of the law if they discharge plastic pellets into waterways, storm drains, or sewers. The Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act (HR 7634) leverages the Clean Water Act to establish zero-discharge limits for these microplastics— also called nurdles— which are the second largest source of ocean microplastics after tire dust (by weight), according to 5 Gyres Institute, researchers into plastic pollution. #plastics #legislation #cleanwateract #waste

Long Island is fast approaching major crossroads that will force 13 towns to make monumental waste management decisions quickly. The most urgent tasks are finding homes for municipal solid waste (MSW) before Brookhaven Landfill shutters and figuring out what to do with construction and demolition (C&D) debris even sooner; the site will no longer take C&D waste beginning at the end of this year. #waste #newyork #recycling #landfill #longisland

The demand for at-home and chef-prepped options has bolstered the need for meal kit delivery service companies such as HelloFresh to refine waste diversion efforts and reduce the food waste generated in the pre-production process. The Berlin-based meal kit provider recently partnered with organics recycler Denali to divert an estimated 4 million pounds of food waste from Phoenix landfills by the end of 2024. The companies began collaborating in 2023 to recycle pre-consumer food waste at HelloFresh facilities in Goodyear and Phoenix, Ariz.

The EPA and PEER are in a legal dispute over whether the EPA is required to regulate PFAS in sewage sludge used as fertilizer, with PEER arguing that the Clean Water Act mandates regulation of these pollutants due to potential harm. Meanwhile, Texas farmers are suing Synagro, claiming its biosolid fertilizer contaminated their land with PFAS, with both cases highlighting concerns over the widespread presence of PFAS in agricultural environments and the EPA's handling of the issue. #PFAS #landfill #agriculture #fertilizer #waste
