Many museums have had their 'fair share' (if there is such a thing) of flooding. If you are looking to prepare, save an hour in your diary on Friday 19 July for Session 2 of the joint Culture in Crisis and ICOM UK webinar series 'Preserving the Past: Strategies for Heritage in Crisis' - Session 2: Water and Flooding.
🌊In partnership with V&A Culture in Crisis, we will be releasing the second episode of 'Preserving the Past: Strategies for Heritage in Crisis'. The second episode, centred on flooding and water, will be hosted by Maria Blyzinsky (Trustee at ICOM UK) and Sam Johnson (Cultural Heritage Preservation Lead for V&A). 👥 🎙️The episode will take place on Friday 19 July at 15:00 BST. Follow the link below to book your place. #HeritageProtection #conservation #museumevent #museum #climatechange #webinar https://lnkd.in/e2gaUb-U

In the Southeast Pacific, off the coast of Chile, underwater mountains create a breathtaking deep-sea landscape where cold-water corals, intricate glass sponges, anemones, and a host of creatures that captivate the imagination are thriving. Nearly half of the animals living here exist nowhere else on Earth. Seamounts are oases for biodiversity; for the last month, an international team of scientists explored this understudied region in our global ocean. Data and imagery collected on the #SEPacificSeamounts expedition will help advance Chile’s effort to establish a high-seas marine protected area along the Nazca and Salas y Gómez Ridges. A passionate Environmental Educator and communicator for over 20 years, I strive to foster connection with and stewardship for nature, by making environmental science accessible, engaging and relevant to my audiences.
Such a brilliant database, with the added citizen science input, real-time data quantity and quality collection continues to grow from strength to strength. This information can then direct conservation efforts in a more targeted and timely manner, picking up on emerging tends of observations (or lack there of) for species. It’s as simple as using the #atlasoflivingaustralia website https://lnkd.in/eEcEHAEP or supporting apps. My app of choice is #iNaturalist to record what where and when you find flora fauna or fungi. Uploading records is very easy;& I love the fact you just need a photo (or sound recording) to upload & the catalogue will give you a good guess, followed up by expert ID. A great resource for the nature enthusiast & students as well 👩🏻🏫 👩🎓 🌳 Happy flora fauna & fungi finding & uploading 📷 🐠 🔈 🐸 👁️ 🦋 🍄 #citizenscience
This fortnight we've uploaded >77k new records to the ALA ⭐ including updated data from SA Government Queensland Museum, Parks and Wildlife Service Western Australia, iNaturalist and more! 🔎 Check out the records here: 🔗 http://spr.ly/6043gEAHS

Ocean Encounters: Seabirds - Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution via YouTube : Surviving life on the open ocean Seabirds are uniquely adapted to life at sea—and uniquely vulnerable to its perils. Many spend the majority of their decades-long lives far from shore, flying thousands of miles over open water to find food, returning to land only to mate and raise their young. Join us as we learn about these extraordinary animals and talk with scientists working to understand and protect them. https://lnkd.in/enH92U-i

Making life-long memories, connecting with nature, and learning from scientists are just a few things you can expect on an Earthwatch expedition. As participant Brooke Sabin says: "For the volunteers, it’s a chance to discover a destination in ways that take them far off the typical tourist track and to connect with people from varied backgrounds—all while contributing to research that aims to protect the planet. In other words, to travel with a purpose." — Brooke Sabin on the expedition "Wildlife in the Changing Andorran Pyrenees" Considering an expedition? My father, David Packard, had a boundless curiosity about the world. When he turned that curiosity to the ocean, he brought a unique vision to the work of understanding the processes that sustain the largest living space on Earth. At MBARI, he teamed up talented scientists and engineers, with n extraordinary marine operations team, exceptional science communicators, and the myriad staff needed to keep the research institute functioning. Collectively, over nearly four decades, they have contributed so much to our knowledge of the living ocean. I'm excited to see what comes next! #ScienceAndEngineering #innovation #MarineScience #OceanExploration #eDNA #robotics #MarineBiology #oceanography #AUVs #mapping #biodiversity #chemistry #geology #MarineBiology #TechnologyTransfer
Celebrating a lasting legacy for ocean exploration! 🎉 From discovering new species of deep-sea jellyfish to revealing the intricate connections between fish migration and the carbon cycle, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute’s (MBARI) contributions have been invaluable in advancing marine science and engineering to understand our changing ocean. Since it was founded in 1987 by David Packard, MBARI has remained an institution that is core to The David and Lucile Packard Foundation's legacy. It was born from David’s belief that addressing the unique challenges of ocean exploration required a new type of research institute—one that was independent in spirit and collaborative by design. What I like in this photo is that space exploration and multi-planetary civilization is still strongly depending on the #mechanicalengineering, #solidmechanics and #fluidmechanics, #heattransfer, #thermodynamics and all that #rocketscience :) not ONLY on AI/ML/DL but also on the rest of ...
