Soon, 20% of Earth’s energy supply might be delivered through space-based solar power orbiting 36,000 km above the planet. This is the goal of Space Solar, a technology company based in Oxfordshire, UK, that aims to be operational by 2035. They stated that the solar space farm — which is expected to be 2km long — could produce more renewable energy than our ground farms do now. We would receive that energy it harvests thanks to technology similar to that of mobile phone signals: the space-based solar power will be connected to receivers on Earth. The partial/total solar eclipse which will occur on Monday 08-April-2024 in North America will be a once in a lifetime event to witness. (See link from #NASA to follow the path of the solar eclipse). https://lnkd.in/gHB7SNyf However, due to the growing reliance on solar for power generation, the solar eclipse may disrupt power supply across the U.S. Within a 3-hr period between 12-3PM CDT, the loss in Solar power generation will reach 100% in major ERCOT (Texas) demand centers. Such rapid loss and recovery in solar power associated with the solar eclipse will pose operational challenges for ERCOT. 1. Will there be enough of additional Gas generation capacity ready to ramp up and down quickly to offset the loss of solar power during this short window? 2. Will there be enough wind generation to supplement the additional gas power supply? 3. Star Catcher Industries will establish an energy grid in space, providing continuous and uninterrupted energy compared to traditional energy collection methods. In the project, which will consist of satellites called "Power Nodes", satellites will collect solar energy and then send highly concentrated energy beams to other satellites. This will increase the energy efficiency of other satellites in space by five to ten times. If we compare Star Catcher's energy grid with traditional energy collection methods, it will give us many more advantages. To collect solar energy, we need to have a clear and open sky. This means we lose a lot of energy at night when the sun goes out and on days when there are heavy rain clouds. With this project, however, we will be able to collect solar energy 24 hours a day without being affected by the weather conditions on our planet. In addition, this method of collecting energy will not occupy our land on earth. In this way, environmental impacts will be minimized. Star Catcher Industries has received $12.25 million in seed investment to realize this grand vision. The company will use the funding to validate its energy beaming technology. After initial ground tests, an orbital demonstration is planned for late 2025. Deployment of commercial services will begin after this demonstration. Besides Star Catcher, other companies such as Caltech and Space Solar are also working on space-based energy projects. Caltech has successfully demonstrated beaming energy to Earth.
