"Arthur D. Little (ADL) has announced the completion of a ground-breaking study into the production of clean energy from space via Direct Sun Reflection (DSR)- ADL has produced this study as part of the European Space Agency’s SOLARIS initiative, which is investigating the technological and commercial feasibility of Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP). ADL leads a SOLARIS consortium composed of ENGIE, Air Liquide, Thales France and Dassault Aviation. DSR is a way of producing clean energy from space via a constellation of orbiting mirrors that can accurately reflect sunlight back to earth. By focusing this sunlight on pre-existing solar farms, DSR can effectively add an additional two hours of bright sunshine a day. This means that solar farms could receive up to 60% more energy a year without any additional infrastructure cost. The study proposes that 4,000 mirrors directing sunlight on approximately 30 solar farms could not only produce 40 times more energy than required for their deployment and operation over 30 years, but also save 8,500 megatons of CO2. As well as boosting the production of both green electricity and green hydrogen, DSR would also make the process much more cost-effective. Arnaud Siraudin, Head of ADL’s Technology & Innovation practice in France, says, “DSR offers best in class optimization compared to other energy production methods – every Euro spent on the DSR system will generate three times its worth in energy. DSR also addresses the pressing need for sustainable energy solutions that can pave the way towards a greener and more resilient future, and aligns with Europe's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.” The ADL-led study proposes that the first proof-of-concept mirror could be launched into orbit in 2025, commercially viable operations at a reduced scale could begin in 2033, and a full-scale DSR architecture could be fully operational by 2043. ADL has been at the cutting edge of SBSP throughout its history, and it was ADL scientist Peter Glaser who first proposed (in 1968) and then patented (in 1973) the idea of orbiting solar power stations that could convert sunlight into microwave energy and transmit it to earth. Soon, 20% of Earth’s energy supply might be delivered through space-based solar power orbiting 36,000 km above the planet. This is the goal of Space Solar, a technology company based in Oxfordshire, UK, that aims to be operational by 2035. They stated that the solar space farm — which is expected to be 2km long — could produce more renewable energy than our ground farms do now. We would receive that energy it harvests thanks to technology similar to that of mobile phone signals: the space-based solar power will be connected to receivers on Earth. Space Solar: Harnessing the Sun's Power 24/7 🌞🌍 As we strive towards a Net Zero future, it is becoming increasingly clear that our current renewable energy infrastructure may not be sufficient to meet our growing energy demands. Space Based Solar Power (SBSP) – a revolutionary concept that could provide clean, continuous, and reliable energy on a global scale provides a sustainable solution. U.K.-based startup Space Solar is leading the charge with their scalable Constant Aperture Solid State Integrated Orbital Phased Array (CASSIOPeiA) design. This innovative system, spanning 1.7 km in diameter and 4 km in length, is equipped with hundreds of thousands of integrated power modules that receive solar energy and beam it back to Earth using high-frequency radio waves. In Geostationary orbit, roughly 36,000 km from Earth, satellites appear stationary relative to Earth which is ideal to continuously beam energy microwaves to a fixed point on Earth. The angle between the CASSIOPeiA satellite, Sun and Earth is constantly changing. What sets CASSIOPeiA apart is its ability to provide power with pinpoint accuracy, thanks to its 360° beam steering technology recently showcased through the Space Solar's Horizontal Array for Receiving RadIo Energy Retrodirectively (HARRIER) demonstrator. By maintaining a constant view of both the Earth and the Sun, one CASSIOPeiA satellite could potentially deliver up to 2GW of carbon-free power – enough to supply a city of 2 million people, 24/7, 365 days a year. Space is traditionally expensive because one-off monoliths were built. New Space and CASSIOPeiA feature modular design and hundreds of thousands of identical modules. This enables high-volume manufacture which lowers the unit production costs and provides the ability to build multiple satellites at a time, commissioning tens of Gigawatts of power generation capacity every year. By providing affordable, abundant, clean and reliable energy, SBSP could complement our existing technologies and help optimize our energy systems as we work towards Net Zero. With the backing of the UK Space Agency and potential other partners, Space Solar could revolutionize the clean and sustainable energy landscape. #SpaceBasedSolarPower #CleanEnergy #NetZero #InnovativeTechnology #FutureOfEnergy
